Hey guys!
Super busy day over here and I’m just finally getting home now at 9:30 and sitting in front of my laptop. Thank you all for the great headache relief suggestions….you know what did it?! A 12 ounce strong iced coffee this morning!!! Halfway through that coffee my headache was GONE and I was feeling so great. I don’t drink coffee every day anymore but sometimes it can be a very good thing. Thank goodness!
This morning I was out and about in Napa for a meeting with the Echelon team and some cyclists. I got to meet pro cyclist Lucas Euser and that was awesome! We actually filmed a little clip that I will be showing y’all once I get it back…lots of fun. The guys were all going for “a casual 90 mile ride” so I opted out…didn’t want to embarrass any of them with my sweet skills, you know? π I snacked on some grapes and a TJ’s strawberry fruit leather throughout the morning and then grabbed a bite to eat at a little deli in Calistoga on my way home since it was already 1:00 and I was STARVING.
Sorry for the poor quality photos…I couldn’t lug around my big camera all day so I shot with the iphone. However, I had a total love affair with this veggie sandwich. Roasted vegetables, lettuce, local goat cheese and vinegarette on soft bread. SO good!
I raced home, got in my yoga clothes and headed back to the studio to work for a few hours. However, I totally forgot to pack a snack! Very unlike me. There weren’t any bars or anything in my car and nothing to be found in the studio so I went next store to Centro Espresso and got an organic yogurt cup with candied walnuts, dried cherries and honey:
Uhhh yeah….this was so much better than anything I could have packed anyways and it was pretty cheap, too. I only ate half of it though because I was worried about eating all that yogurt and then taking a 90 minute power class. Speaking of class, Anna led a ROCKING special Baptiste bootcamp-style class tonight. It was super intense…..we held warrior two and crescent for a wee bit longer than normal and my triceps are talking to me. Not to mention a really, really long frog pose at the end. Thanks for that, Anna. π
Pizza never tasted so good afterward:
I convinced Rocky and Adam to only get meat on half and this totally hit the spot. Love me some thick crust and gooey cheese π
Want to mention that I am giving up MEAT for Lent. I feel like since I moved to California I’ve eaten a ton of it….and this is a great time to downscale a little. This is probably going to be a challenge because I dine out a bunch and next weekend I’m going snowboarding with a group of friends who all eat meat, but I’ll figure something out. I was thinking about Lent yesterday and this just seems fitting for me right now.
Time to ease my sore yoga muscles into the tub and bed!

February 17, 2010 at 9:53 pmThat yogurt cup sounds bomb!
Still curious as to what your job is with the winery. I know it isn’t “wine season”, but you came all the way out to Cali for this job (right?), and it seems you seldom work there anymore. Just curious =]

February 17, 2010 at 10:00 pmHillary,
I’ve cut back my own hours to focus more on writing. When I moved out to California I didn’t have a book deal or that responsibility….since then, the book and writing has shifted to take center plate and I’ve scaled back on other things.

February 17, 2010 at 9:58 pmi’m giving up meat too! i love the stuff…probably in an unhealthy way…and just want to be thankful for the amazing abundance God has provided through the earth as well!
i’m excited to see the little clip y’all filmed π

February 17, 2010 at 10:06 pmLove the positive sides of coffee! Good luck with giving up meat for lent… I still haven’t really picked something to give up.

February 17, 2010 at 10:09 pmI get a headache if I don’t have my AM espresso. That yogurt cup looks so delish!

February 17, 2010 at 10:09 pmBeautiful Sandwitch. Doesn’t everything taste better with goat cheese? hahaa

February 17, 2010 at 10:10 pmThat pizza looks amazing. (Minus green peppers, I’m not a fan.) Love the cheese and mushrooms though!

February 17, 2010 at 10:22 pmWay to go on the giving up meat! I gave up meat for lent 7 years ago and I haven’t eaten it since π I don’t even miss it at all! I gave up all refined sugar and white flour…should be a STRUGGLE. I also gave up drunk-eating…something EVERY college student struggles with! I think it’s safe to say the next 40 days will be a struggle for us both, but hopefully a rewarding one!
Allie (Live Laugh Eat)
February 17, 2010 at 10:44 pmOooh good ‘give-up’ idea. I’m still brainstorming for a good one. I’m running out of time though!
Ummm 9 mile bike ride is already a trip for me….90!!??
Lindsay
February 17, 2010 at 10:45 pmWow. No meat for 40 days?! Do you think it’s going to be difficult to re-introduce to your body in 6 weeks? So ambitious (but very admirable) of you. Speaking of eating a lot of meat, did you see the “Mapping America’s Eating Habits” article on Good.IS yesterday? They illustrate your point perfectly! http://www.good.is/post/mapping-america-s-eating-habits?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+good%2Flbvp+%28GOOD+Main+RSS+Feed%29

February 18, 2010 at 12:15 amThat is so cool that you met Lucas Euser. Those professional cyclists are machines! I got to see the Tour de France in person this past year, and I was just in awe of the dedication and strong work ethic these athletes have. I can’t wait to see the video!

February 18, 2010 at 12:17 amCoffee does wonders for headaches. So does salad.
I was just wondering if you’re still working at the winery or if you’re just taking some time off to finish up the book?

February 18, 2010 at 3:27 amGood luck on giving up meat! I’ve recently discovered how delicious and protein packed home-cooked navy beans are. I highly recommend them for a protein alternative.
That yogurt snack looks amazing, practically like dessert!

February 18, 2010 at 3:30 amI’m glad your headache finally went away!
Long frog poses are so intense. When I went to the Baron Baptiste workshop, I swear we held it for 10 minutes and that was after practicing with him all day long. It was insane.
Karla
February 18, 2010 at 4:11 amEverything looks so delicious!
90 mile casual bike ride!??! How long does that take them?
I talked to my boyfriend yesterday and he said he was going on a 40 mile ride today, which sounded nuts! But 90 miles?!?!?
Michele
February 18, 2010 at 4:25 amGiving up meat is a good one. I decided last week to give up sugar in all (ALL) forms (not even honey or agave) except two servings of fruit per day.
Good luck, and remember to focus on why we’re doing this, not what we’re doing.
Britton
February 18, 2010 at 4:31 amI gave up meat as well! Good luck!

February 18, 2010 at 4:37 amToday I’m going to be taking a vinyasa yoga class. I’ve done yoga on and off for years, but I’d really like it to become a part of my life. I think I could really benefit from the mindfulness it teaches. I’ll be thinking of you!

February 18, 2010 at 4:42 amHa, 90-miles..nothing special. I eat 90-miles for brunch? Can’t wait to see the video clip! That’s awesome that you are giving up meat. It wouldn’t be super hard for me here, but it would definitely be a challenge in wine country with the amazing restaurants. But hopefully, you will also be able to find amazing vegetarian dishes as well.
For lent I am adding something, I am going to bed earlier and waking up while it’s still dark to have some quiet time with the Lord and getting in the word. I started it a day late, but I am loving it. The super challenge will be on the weekends, waking up that early. But it takes the excuse away that I don’t have time!

February 18, 2010 at 4:50 amyou’ll be fine with no meat! Does that include fish or just red meat? Either way your diet is mostly yogurt and hummus anyways. π

February 18, 2010 at 5:00 amThat’s a great idea for lent . . . I’m trying to 86 dessert, which is definitely going to be a challenge.
I have been the only vegetarian snowboarder in the group several times and pizza, veggie burgers, and veggie burritos are all pretty amazing after a day of riding!

February 18, 2010 at 5:02 amI want that whole sandwich and that whole pizza. The crust and cheese on the pizza look great…I would eat it all ! No sharing!
I don’t really jive with the whole “giving up food” for lent….I think its more about “giving up” something important…like with me I am going to try to “give up” comparing, negativity, guilt, etc….those are the toughest thing of all!
Have a nice day Jenna. Would love some of that California weather you have π

February 18, 2010 at 5:09 amI feel that a lot of people “use” Lent as an excuse to go on a “restriction/diet” sort of thing – not that that’s what your doing!! – (I also know you are Christian right?)…but I have friends who don’t even KNOW WHAT LENT IS and are all like, “oh, I’m giving up candy, etc etc…”.
Anyways, that’s all π

February 18, 2010 at 5:14 amWhat an amazing day of food. It’s posts like this that make me miss northern California so so much!!
I’m going to have to remember that coffee trick for next time a migraine comes along.

February 18, 2010 at 5:17 amThat is very exciting about Lucas Euser. I am a massive Garmin fan and his wreak in Spain was pretty shocking and bad last May. Glad he is working on a comeback, even though he’ll be riding for a team other than Garmin.

I’m giving up all chips, poptarts, etc – basically non-natural foods!

February 18, 2010 at 5:39 amI thought about giving up meat, but after reading this post: http://jenngirl.wordpress.com/2010/02/18/lent/ I decided to give up TV on the weekdays unless it’s at the gym and use the extra time to become more focused on important things and do some prayer and reading.

February 18, 2010 at 5:51 amHey, Jenna!
ItΒ΄s great to know your headache went away… CoffeeΒ΄s a blessing, sometimes! Personally, I donΒ΄t really drink it here (in Brazil), because itΒ΄s already too hot, and because I donΒ΄t really crave it. But, while I was in Boston/NYC, I had like 2 cups of coffee per day! Ok, it wasnΒ΄t really pure coffee (I actually used to drink lattes or mistos), but I felt it was extremely necessary due to the cold! I simple needed something hot to hold on to π
I loved your sandwich, by the way! Mouth watering, haha.
Have an awesome Thursday!
Kisses from a warm place,
Gabriela

February 18, 2010 at 6:17 amI didn’t realize so many others were giving up meat for Lent, too! I eat quite a bit of meat – turkey sandwiches at lunch & chicken often with dinner – so it is going to be a true test for me. Look forward to seeing what eats you have so I can be inspired!

February 18, 2010 at 6:18 amI think your reasons and plan for giving up meat for Lent are totally appropriate, and you’ll be able to do it π
Glad the coffee helped! That makes sense because I think migraines cause blood vessels in the head to DILATE and the caffeine in coffee CONSTRICTS them so, there ya go!

February 18, 2010 at 6:22 amThat sandwich looks amazing- as usual. Anything with goat cheese is amazing, lets just put it that way. Glad your headache went away! February 18, 2010 at 6:24 amPizza looks GOOOOOD!! I’m giving up SWEETS for lent and it’s defff going to be hard. I’m also trying to actually stick to the whole no-meat-on-Fridays thing. It’s not that it’s that hard, but more that I always forget!!

So glad the coffee helped you get rid of that headache! And wow, a 90 mile casual ride?

February 18, 2010 at 7:31 amGreat idea to give up meat! I didn’t think of that. I’m trying to give up “negativity” but it’s kind of a vague one! Maybe I should think of something better π

February 18, 2010 at 7:41 amAnother alternative that works wonders is Gatorade. I have very frequent migraines, and when meds, and hydrating with water, and caffeine doesn’t work, Gatorade does, and fast. I’m sure it’s the electrolytes.

February 18, 2010 at 8:14 amGlad to hear that your headache is gone. I can not believe that a cup of coffee cured you! That would have made my headache worse. I avoid anything with caffeine in it when I have a headache.
I also have given up meat for Lent. But I will probably allow myself fish once a week. I have been busy researching recipes and trying to see how I can get everything that I need without eating meat. I look forward to see what you eat. I might have to try a few things!

February 18, 2010 at 8:33 amI get headaches alot and to nip them in the bud I soak in a warm bath of lavender epsom salts… you can get them at drugstore.com- also really helps sore muscles! π and you get magnesium!

February 18, 2010 at 9:47 amI have a question, but it is sort of a tricky one. Let me preface this with saying that I in no way mean to offend you or readers or belittle the religious tradition of giving something up for lent. My family is is Unitarian Universalist, so while a Christian sect, never observed Lent or gave anything up for it. I was first exposed to this tradition in college when some of my roommates started discussing what they were giving up that year. I have since been under the impression (purely based on my limited experience) that giving something up for Lent was often – definitely not always! – used as an excuse to go on a diet for girls/women who didn’t want to admit they wanted to go on a diet (i.e. I’m giving up sugar, I’m giving up fried foods). I do not think this is always the case and definitely not in your case by any means. I think limiting meat is great, for you, for the environment, etc. However, as you grew up very differently, I’m really curious to hear your thoughts.
