Lunch

Bye,Bye Splenda!

Well, my headache managed to go away but now I’m all jittery because I ended up taking an excedrin migraine (aka a caffeine pill) AND I had some coffee before class! Got rid of my migraine but I hate the way my body feels right now! yuck! I shouldn’t have had that cup of coffee…oh well, only drank half.

For lunch I kept things simple with a gardenburger with muenster cheese, spinach (that’s what is sticking out all over the place in the picture, haha!) and honey mustard on a whole wheat english muffin with a sliced pear on the side. As always, it hit the spot—I LOVE gardenburgers!! I’m waiting to hear if I have to work tonight or not. If not, I’m going to go to yoga and if I do, I guess I’ll just hit the gym.

Thank you all for all your input on migraines! I actually HAVE seen a chiropractor and have also done the whole chinese medicine thing. They both worked for the moment but I still get them randomly. I def don’t get them as much as I used to in college—that was HORRIBLE—but I think my stress has reduced since then as well. Also, the weather plays a large factor in when I get them as well. Odd, huh? I have made the decision to cut out all splenda from my diet…I actually gave my box of packets to my roommate. I don’t know if splenda contributes to my migraines, but I just like things to be as natural as possible and seeing as I don’t condone any other artificial sweeteners, splenda is out as well. From now on I will use only natural cane sugar or honey to sweeten my teas and coffees. Yay!

This morning, on my way to class I had a kiwi that I had previously cut up and bagged, along with about 8 kashi crackers (small handful).

    Jenna,

Just to let you know when I first gave up the splenda in my coffee, any other food that ahd splenda and all sugar free gum I got bad migraines and I think it was due to my body kind of detoxing from all those chemicals so just be aware of that!

Jenna, like you, I live alone but like variety. I know you are big freezer person, but my question is I get so sick of eating only bread, bagels, or for an entire week. How do you (and any readers who have ideas) solve this problem. I know freezing works, but I don’t exactly want a few months worth of rolls and other bread products sitting in my house at one time! Any ideas?

hey just wanted to say, i was reading yesterdays posts where ppl where asking about bars to tide you over. I don’t know if any of you have tried the Fiber One bars but I love them! They’re 140 calories and 4 grams of fat and come in Caramel (my fave!) pb and chocolate. they hold me over really well for a bar and are great for satisfying a sweet tooth

I get headaches quite frequently too, but they only come when I sneeze or blow my nose too hard or laugh too much…does anyone else have these kinds of headaches? I have recently cut out all splenda/artificial sweeteners (SF gum was the hardest!!) and it is helping a little!

    Jenna,
I was wondering when you list the calories for lunch do those include your midmorning snack calories or just the lunch calories?

  • jenna
    February 5, 2008 at 6:19 pm

Hi! Those are just lunch calories. I usually dont include my snack calories because, well, its just a snack and I don’t keep track of them myself. Usually it works out though that my morning snack is around 120-130 calories and my afternoon snack is 150-220 calories.

    Emily,
I also get headaches frequently, and they can often come from the things you described. I’ve decided that I liken those to lack of oxygen, and force of the activity. I’m not a doctor, and that is the only thing I can think of. There might be a real reason. I also get headaches from light that causes my eyes to strain.
Usually, when I get headaches sitting for a few minutes, focusing on my breathing and drinking a TON of water helps.

I get migraines when the weather changes, too… usually when the air pressure changes from cloudy or stormy weather. I find that alternating hot compresses on my face and cold on my neck helps. I do take prescription medicine, and don’t feel bad about it one bit. I have heard of people having luck with acupuncture, but I haven’t tried it. Alcohol, lack of sleep, bright flashes of light, and stress definitely are triggers for me, too. Because I am pretty much incapacitated by mine (I get visual auras and am basically blind for a few hours) I usually take migraine days as days to give my body a rest. I find that caffeine helps my migraines go away (that’s part of why it is in Excedrin) but for other people it apparently makes it much worse, so you might want to experiment with that. I feel your pain! Hope you feel better soon.

good afternoon ladies… jumping back to the “putting on healthy pounds” discussions: do you guys find it is better to plan out what you are going to eat? (like the night before for example or maybe even a couple days in advance). i feel like if i start doing this maybe i will be able to up my calories more successfully. i feel like when i dont plan i am rushed and just default to my usual amounts/types of food. the thing that is holding me back from planning is that it feels like it will make me MORE rigid? i also like to be able to eat what i am in the mood for and if i plan a roast beef lunch and feel like pb&j i worry…? suggestions appreciated!

For Jenna and all the other migraine sufferers…

Here’s a recent article from Health about 5 surprising things that cause headaches. Some of them actually weren’t a surprise to me, since some of them are actually migraine triggers of mine, but I thought it was interesting.

Have you ever tried the Sunshine Burger brand of veggie burgers? Each burger only has 6-7 ingredients and their taste is FAR superior to the other brands (in my humble opinion, of course, haha): http://sunshineburger.com/products/

I’m SO happy to read that you are abandoning Splenda – it’s good to get it out of your system now; especially since you were getting such terrible migraines!! Hopefully today’s painful headache was your last!

blueberrybabe, a have dealt with restrictive eating, and am now trying to get over it and start eating a healthy and balanced diet. About two weeks ago, I started writing out on my computer what I would be eating for the day. (I like doing it on the comp because I can adjust/change things easier then written out on paper.) I will typeout everything for my bfasts, lunches, and dinners in the morning, and then have it as a lay out. If it comes to lunchtime, and I dont feel like the sandwhich I planned, I will often change it to what Im craving, just adjusting the calories and trying to get the same amount in. I feel that its a lot easier for me to eat all of the things I need in my diet when I write out what each meal will include, like bfast will have a whole grain, dairy, and fruit. Lunch will have protein, vegies, and dairy, etc etc.
Before I started doing this I would always randomly throw together my meals and they werent always the most healthful thigns, so i feel like it helps, but I guess its different for everyone. I also usually wouldnt eat enough calories before I started doing this, so now its almost like what Jenna does with her blog, you dont forget a single thing youve eaten for the day, so I got to see that I really wasnt getting enough in food wise.

I just wanted to let all the readers know I had one cup Nature’s Path Peanut Butter Granola for breakfast this morning (because I woke up late) and was extremely pleased at how long it held me. I usually eat oatmeal with fruit and walnuts or peanut butter. But I always have to have a snack mid morning. On mornings when I work out, I usually have a whole Luna bar. This morning I was still so full I didn’t have my Luna bar and did 45 minutes cardio and a 45 minute pump class. Even after class I wasn’t starving. Very impressive for me so I thought I would pass on the information…

Hey Jenna, I gots a question for you since you’re becoming quite the baker:

Have you ever made crackers? I tried once and they tasted alright but looked abysmal. I have no idea how to begin. Anybody else have some tried and true cracker methods?

What brand of veggie burgers do you buy? And how do you cook them? Whenever I microwave mine they come out a tad bit mushy.
    Thanks!

    Jenna & All,

What’s your take on the Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Pancake Mix? the ingredients look decent…but you do have to add oil. do you guys think i could sub applesauce for oil in these? has anyone tried this?
