Don’t Stop Believin’….

I’m not sure if it was the blinding rain, the new shoes, or the Rocky music I was listening to (my dad made me a running mix with Rocky, the beatles, rolling stones, prince, rascall flats and journey)…..but I just ran 3 miles and didn’t stop!!!!!!! I just started slow and ran and ran and ran….! And, yes, it was pouring outside but it actually felt kind of good because it wasn’t hot for a change. I was only going to do 2 miles today but when I got out there I felt so good that I just didn’t want to stop! Sorry if I’m gushing—I’m just super happy about it because never in my life have I ran for that long without walking…..and it felt good!

Hi, Jenna! I’m a long-time lurker of your blog and enjoy it very much! It was interesting to see your stats from your run today. Mine are very similar – I have a pretty high heart rate when I run. However, I only figure that I’m really burning about 60% of what my HRM says because it doesn’t seem possible that I’m really burning that many calories. I’ve been running for over 1.5 years, and I can run about 5 miles outside without stopping.

Usually, I can burn about 833 calories running about 4.5 miles on a treadmill at a 1% incline about 5.5-6 mph., which is on track with what you posted above. So, I figure I really burned about 500 of that instead. I know that this probably doesn’t matter to you since you’re not trying to lose weight, but it has been sort of puzzling/troubling to me because I’m trying to lose 5-10 pounds. Oh, and FYI: I’m at a BMI of 20.5, and I’m 26 years old.

I’m actually going to go to a testing facility to have my real max HR and VO2 max tested. I went to a cardiologist to have my heart looked at, and he said I was fine and that sometimes young women have a high heart like that. My resting HR is only 59. It’s only high when I exercise. My suspicion is that my max is higher than predicted for my age (194), especially since I regularly see 200 on my HRM. I want to get my HRM calibrated correctly so that it can more accurately calculate the calorie burn.

Okay, now that I wrote a novel on your blog, congratulations on running 3 miles in a row! When I first started running, I never thought I could do it. Sometimes I get such a high just from being able to run for a long period of time. It’s such an amazing sense of accomplishment. Way to go!!!

i am surprised you burn so many calories in your run. the rule of thumb is that 100 calories are burned/mile–that’s for a 150 lb woman. i am around 115 lbs and i only burn 349 calories per every 4 miles run. unless your warm up was running a couple of miles or sprinting/jogging/walking, the calories burned results seem off.

i am just wondering what the difference is. is it an issue overall cardiovascular health or just an issue of differing calculators/monitors? or did you just go 5 miles total?

regardless, calories aren’t the most important thing anyway. im glad your run was successful! you might be going further than you think sill.

and i love your camel pack–they’re fabulous, aren’t they?

    raybelle,

I don’t really look as calories as the importance but I have always always had a very high heart rate and metabolic burn rate. This is why I lose weight more easily than I gain weight. I really did run 3 miles and I’m just going by what my Polar F4 says for calories. It might be off…I don’t really care that much..I don’t THINK it’s off though since it is a polar heart rate monitor and not just a monitor on a treadmill or something. My resting heart rate is like 60 and I can easily go above 200 on high intensity workouts. I guess it just varies person to person—that’s why I have to make sure to eat enough food!!

    Katie s,

I have the box in my trunk. I will get back to you! They are orthotics though!

    Michelle,

LOVE them ! Obviously they take me distances I never thought possible..
