I am beyond pumped to be heading to Ethiopia this weekend with fashionABLE!
I have talked a ton about fashionABLE on here over the past year, but in case you’re new and have no idea what I’m talking about, here’s some background. The fashionABLE mission is to create sustainable business for Africans so they aren’t dependent upon charity, but instead earn the dignity of a job. Born out of Mocha Club’s Economic Freedom project, they offer opportunity to everyone, with a primary focus on empowering women. When fashionABLE invests in a woman, statistics demonstrate that she will have a life changing impact on her family and community… and herself. fashionABLE provides sustainable business opportunities, like making these amazing scarves, to exploited and vulnerable women in Africa.
Mocha Club is a community giving up the cost of a few mochas a month to fund development projects in Africa. Committed to locally developed projects where the community identifies the needs and the response, Mocha Club’s end goal is to always create real, sustainable solutions. They work in 5 main project areas: Clean Water, Healthcare, Orphan Care, Education, & Economic Freedom.
I’ll be traveling with a team of other bloggers to Addis Ababa and Nazaret, Ethiopia to spend time with the women both companies work with. Lacking meaningful resources and a sense of hope, many women in Ethiopia resort to prostitution as a means of supporting themselves & their families. They are often desperate to leave the sex industry, but remain trapped by a lack of opportunity and rehabilitative support. Through our visits and storytelling, we hope to engage and educate our followers on what is being done to bring hope through creating jobs and sustainable business here.
Interested in learning more? Watch this short video! Warning: have kleenex ready. I can’t watch this without tearing up. Gets me every time.
In honor of our upcoming trip, I’ll be giving away some awesome fashionABLE items here today!
One lucky winner will receive a gorgeous Meseret scarf, as well as a BRAND NEW leather clutch! Yep, that’s right, fashionABLE is about to start producing handmade leather items… isn’t that clutch amazing? I can’t wait to get one myself.
The giveaway will end on Thursday morning. Good luck!

August 6, 2013 at 4:52 amI like to snack on veggies, or nuts. When I went to Disney I made chia/almond milk/protein powder concoctions in the recyclable disney hotel room cups every night and put them in the fridge. In the morning I’d cut kiwi and strawberry and take them with me. Took literally 5 mins to prep (and all night to sit in the fridge).

August 6, 2013 at 6:18 amDepends if I’m traveling domestic or internationally… Domestic makes it easy to bring lots of fresh foods and baked goods. If I’m leaving the country, I like to make sure that I have a bunch of bars with protein. Kind bars are great. Also, I learned this trick way back- bring pureed fruit pouches (yes, the kind for kids) if you aren’t sure if you’ll have access to fruits and vegetables. They are a lifesaver- both for feeling healthy and getting in some fiber.

then there is one particular gas station just north of the grapevine where I stop EVERY time to get my Bit O Honey….

August 7, 2013 at 9:34 amMy favorite travel snack: I usually bring a Cliff (or other similar granola) bar for each day I’m travelling. Because they’re individually wrapped (not something I usually promote), they don’t get nasty if you’re in a hot or humid climate. I never want my travel time to be jeopardized by feeling hangry or spending precious time looking for snacks to fix the hangry. Also saves a lot of money when you otherwise would need to go to a sit-down restaurant!
