Keep Smiling!

Hi guys! Happy Sunday 🙂

Sorry for the belated post but our internet was down all morning! It’s a GORGEOUS day here in Tampa…about 75 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Of course, I wish it were about 10 degrees cooler for a “real” fall day, but I can’t complain. When I got up this morning I made a mess with 1 cup plain, nonfat organic yogurt, 1/2 cup shredded wheat with strawberries, a banana, peanut butter and some raspberry preserves:

And then, about 2 hours later, I went on a run. I was going for 6 miles this morning but failed miserably. Well, I don’t want to say “failed” exactly….but something was just not right. I felt horrible the entire time—my tummy was aching, my shins were hurting and I was huffing and puffing hard. I made it about 4 1/2 miles before walking the mile home. Now, I attribute this lousy run to a couple reasons:

1. I had 2 big glasses of wine last night (plus cake), didn’t get to bed until 1:00 and got up at 8:00

2. I never do well when I run in the morning because my shins are still pretty sore from sleeping

3. I had a big cup of coffee from the coffee shop across the street only about 20 minutes before I left the house and it was sort of sloshing around in my tummy the whole time

I refuse to let myself get too discouraged about this though because the past couple weeks my runs have been great. I won’t let one lousy run bring me down! Plus, I DID run 4 1/2 miles and I burned a TON of calories (my heart rate was super high this morning for some reason). I think the highlight of it all was when I was about a half mile from the house when I saw Ryan running towards me! Now, Ryan does not run. He has had knee problems and back problems since college. But still, there he was running towards me! He told me he worked out upstairs at the gym and then wanted to surprise me by meeting me on my run. I told him I felt really sick and he walked me home. What a guy!

After we got back and I iced my leg and stretched, I made a plate of leftovers my mom gave to us for lunch:

This is my mom’s signature pulled chicken and some mac & cheese. I felt a lot better after I ate.

We are about to go lay outside and I’m going to dive into a new book. Tonight we have game 4 of the World Series and hopefully the Rays will make a comeback!!

Feel better! I used to never be able to make it through morning runs until recently. One tip: I cannot put ANYTHING on my stomach within 1 1.5-3 hours before I run (depending on what I eat). Coffee is in there around the two hour mark. So if I am planning on running first thing in the morning, I have a bedtime snack (which usually involves peanut butter since it takes my body a long time to digest that) with lots of water instead of eating something in the morning. Also, a good long warm-up walk and some stretching may help with the shins? I’m not sure about that, my shins get sore when I sit a long time and I sweat it takes forever to get them to release!

    Lauren,

The recipes my mom used are from different cookbooks so we can’t copy them on the blog for legal purposes. The macaroni and cheese is from the Magnolia Restaurant Cookbook—Magnolias is one of my FAV restaurants in Charleston!! The blueberry chicken is from a cookbook called “The Maple Syrup Cookbook”, which we all love. All the recipes (and desserts!) are amazing from there!

About your heart rate… it was probably up because of the coffee… some athletes definitely drink it before races for that effect… but it’s something you have to be careful with! It’s odd that it didn’t make you feel more energetic, though, guess that just goes to show how many different things you had working against you on that run today!

Coffee before running hurts my stomach, although some runners swear by it. I want to try it before a race because I hear it improves performance, but I’m too scared!
