Dinner

Like the Sky

I feel like the sky.

Seriously!!! Blehhhhh! I knew it was coming—-hormones + foul weather = migraines but I hadn’t had one yet and was crossing my fingers. And then it came….today at work, and I had to actually leave work to go pick up my prescription migraine meds from the drugstore because I needed to take a pill. I picked them up ($50 for 4 PILLS!!!), took one with lunch and proceeded on with my day. I hadn’t taken one of these pills (Imitrex) in quite some time and sort of “forgot” that when you take one, you really need to lay down. It made my migraine go away, yes, but I started to feel increasingly ill during the afternoon and STILL feel sick and it’s now 7:00!

Needless to say, I unfortunately missed my meeting at school as well as school itself and I’m here at my apartment with Dexter feeling sorry for ourselves and the poopy weather. I just can’t believe how sick these pills make you feel! I don’t even think it’s worth it that it makes the migraine go away because you have a whole new set of problems to deal with (dizziness, nausea, zero energy…).

Ok—I’m now off my soapbox and will proceed with food. Sorry guys! Just one of those days :(. When I finally made it home after being stuck in storm traffic for an hour (!!!!) the only thing that really sounded good to me for dinner was an omelet. I had a three egg white omelet with a slice of reduced fat cheddar cheese, a chobani yogurt with agave, a big pile of strawberries and kiwi and a morningstar farms sausage patty.

After my bath, I had half a toasted Ezekiel english muffin with a smear of almond butter and raspberry preserves. I’m sure I will be making some herbal tea in a bit as well!

I still don’t feel like myself at all and I’m very glad I made the decision not to go to school because standing over melting chocolate for five hours probably would have not been such a great idea. Hopefully I’m not actually getting sick and I just need to sleep off this ick!

I hate to end on such a “blah” note to here is my dose of positivity for the night: Did ANYONE watch the Today show this morning with the panda rescue in Beijing???!!!  I guess after the massive earthquake in China tons of poor pandas were left homeless and injured. So, this incredible Chinese man thought up the idea of the panda sanctuary! He rescued pandas and has a group of volunteers, each who are assigned to two pandas that they care for specifically in the sanctuary. They nurse the pandas back to health and give them a safe space to run around, play and create baby pandas :). This makes me happy!!
Oh! And I had a dark chocolate truffle at work today (along with a small bite of this macadamia nut/butterscotch/oreo cookie concoction ) that the pastry chef made but I forgot my camera at home. It was yummy but didn’t help my head 🙁

G’night!

Feel better, Jenna! Migraines suck and so do the pills. I hope you’re back to feeling like yourself soon. And I hope that weather clears up for you sometime in the near future.

I did see the Today show. I was in China during the earthquake and knew they had to evacuate the pandas but I wasn’t sure where they would end up. I’m glad to know that man is doing something to take good care of them! It’s good to see some good news on tv instead of just the bad stuff.

Poor Jenna, I hope you feel better soon. Perhaps you should check out the reason for your bad migraines. You seem to get them very often. Could it be due to a food intolerance?

Good call about skipping class. You wouldn’t be at your best anyway and the heat may make you feel worse.

    Alicia,

I wish I knew more. I’ve been to see many a neurologist and had dozens of tests run…..they all say the same thing really: genetics. My mom and grandma get them and I have the tendency to get very stressed out (my vice!) which only brings them on more. Also, around that time of the month is always a killer and they are basically a given. Not fun but I’m constantly on the research looking for more natural ways to control them….

on a sadder note: I just finished that book by Charles Martin “Where the River Ends” and I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT!!!!!!!! Oh my goodness, its the saddest book I have ever read. So depressing! I cried through the last 100 pages 🙁 Wonderful prose but very tragic and I prefer to read happier tales! I’m on to my next book “Train to Trieste”, which might be a bit on the up side. I need to go to the library! I just finish these books too quickly and they are so expensive!!!

    Jenna,

Have you ever tried Relpax for migraines? It works great, but with less of the side effects. Maybe something to bring up with your doctor?

    Hope you feel better soon!

Gracie: Not sure if you’ll see this, but I’ve heard Vitamin B12 can be good for anxiety. I have struggled with anxiety for the past few years, and this seems to help.

You poor thing! As an occasional migraine co-sufferer, I know how you feel, they suck!!

I currently have “the ick” too. I really don’t want to get sick either, but just in case, I plan on taking the day off from work tomorrow to sleep all day and/or have a The Hills watching marathon (I looooove that show)!

Sorry you feel so sick Jenna! I just wanted to add a thought: I noticed you only eat the egg whites, which is where all the protein is, but the yolk has SO many great additions of vitamins (and I’m sure you’ve read the cholesterol is the good type!) which help you to absorb all the elements in the white. Have you considering eating one egg white and one complete egg instead? Saves money, too!

There are other medications out there besides Imitrex for headaches if you haven’t tried them. One of my patients can not take the Triptans because they make her feel so ill (Imitrex, Maxalt, etc) but there are other classes, propanolol for example, that shouldn’t make you feel that ill but you may have to take it once a day to prophylactically prevent the migraines from starting in the first place. Would your doctor’s office be willing to give you a shot of toradol and compazine for when you have a rare migraine? I used that a lot of my old ER patients, and it worked like a charm a lot of the time too…
