Hi guys!
Thank you for all the encouraging race comments! It went really well this morning….I set a new PR (25:50) and got second place in my age group! =)
And scored my first trophy! Sweet!
Here is a complete recap! I woke up at 5:30 this morning and since I had to be at the race so early, I didn’t want to eat a full breakfast first. So, instead I snacked on this bar and had two glasses of water + a cup of coffee
it was green!!
Delicious though….love those Odwalla bars!!! This was perfect fuel for the big 3.1. Haha 😉
I filled my water bottle up with electrolyte juice
aka coconut water
And my mom and I hit the road! The race was only a few miles away so it didn’t take much time at all to get there. It started at 7:30 and my mom was designated as camera girl since she wasn’t running this one. 😉 It was a very small race and my first time running on pavement in awhile. I was a little worried about the impact on my shins, but it was very bearable. Softer surfaces like trails feel the best but at least pavement is better than concrete, right?
Pre-race registration:
100% of proceeds go to supporting those that cannot afford vision repair surgery and to better the lives of young people with permanent blindness.
Warming up:
Crossing the finish and setting new PR of 25:50!!!!
And then chugging coconut water:
I LOVE MY GARMIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Like Meghann said, now that I have run with it, there’s no way I could ever be without it. I think I stared at my wrist for the whole three miles! A couple times at the beginning, I made myself slow down because I was pacing a 7:30 mile and new I would burn out! It was SO beneficial and interesting to watch my pace the entire time and know when to push myself and when to back off. I averaged 8:23 the first mile, 8:28 the second mile and 8:08 the last mile. I sprinted my heart out when I saw the finish line and therefore my best pace was 4:49!! crazy, huh?!
Another perk of this race…..the food was AMAZING! After the race I had a delicious apple—
And then I was going to wait and get a bagel from Panera, but I got really hungry really fast and the RICE AND BEANS were calling my name!! How awesome that they had my favorite Cuban dish as post-race food?! I loaded up my plate with yellow rice, black beans, raw onions and TONS of hot sauce
Breakfast of champions!
Now I am home and icing down
But I am getting ready to shower, eat AGAIN (haha) and then head over to St.Pete to meet Ryan (he went to a concert last night with friends and stayed overnight at his parent’s house) and MEGHANN (!!!) to go to the beach all day!
Happy Saturday! See you in a bit!

March 21, 2009 at 12:47 pmCongrats on an awesome race! I run with the NikePlus “pedometer” thing on my ipod, but I’m really interested in getting a HR monitor and one with a pedometer seems so cool. The only thing is – it seems so huge! Did it feel bulky or weird on your wrist while you ran? Great job!

March 25, 2009 at 7:50 pmHi Jenna!
Can you tell us more about the Garmin? My Nike Triax Elite (HRM/SDM) just totally croaked and it was my first… I feel a little lost 🙁 On Amazon, the Garmin Forerunner 305 looks affordable and like it is similarly equipped, except for the footpod (which also looks reasonable, sold separately).
How does the chest band feel? I saw in another post you swim in it – does it stay in place in the water? Do you feel like you could use it as a regular watch (in your pictures it’s hard to tell how bulky it is on you, but on Amazon it looks HUGE!)? If so, how many alarms does it have? Hrm, I’m sure I have more but we’ll start there….
Thanks! :>
Susan
March 25, 2009 at 7:51 pmps – for calories burned, can you configure it to yourself, or does it use a generic formula like a treadmill does?
jenna
March 26, 2009 at 2:38 pmSusan,
It works according to your age, weight, height and then configures your high and low zones. When you put the sensor on your chest, it reads your heart rate. No generic formula!
And I LOVE my Garmin! I got a lot of info on it on Amazon, actually, if you search for the ForeRunner 305. It is totally worth the investment and I love it especially because it tracks my distance so I can run anytime, anywhere!
Laura,
Definitely! Check out http://www.yogadownload.com . All their classes are arranged according to experience level and they are very self explanatory. I love them!
