Not Lookin Good…

So…my camera seems to be malfunctioning, which is scaring me a little bit because if it breaks I really can’t afford to get another one (until I ask for a new one for my birthday in June). There’s something wrong with the flash and it isn’t connecting properly to my computer. Not good news. Anyways, on a better note, I went to a pretty challenging step class at the gym this morning and it was awesome! I went to a lot of step classes in college because I love how cardiovascular they are. I really work up a sweat! For lunch I made a simple tofurky sandwich on Ezekiel bread with honey mustard, lettuce and a little bit of vegan rella. On the side I had a few tomato-basil veggie chips and a pear.

Let’s hope the camera makes it! Sorry for the horrible lunch photo!

Oh no!! I’m hoping that the camera malfunctions are just temporary – hopefully your camera will cooperate soon!!

Oooh, those tomato-basil chips sound quite delicious – yum!! Is that a red starksimmon pear? bosc? I’m curious :0)

That is a red bosc pear. I haven’t seen them before actually so I grabbed a couple at W.F. the other day. I liked it, but I prefer the plum colored pears better because they have a sweeter taste. This was good, but the sweetness was more mellow. I do love pears!

regarding the ezekiel sesame bread, how do you like it, jenna? i’m always tempted to try it, but i’d rather get your opinion first! 🙂

So, what’s everyone’s favorite kind of yogurt? I want to make the pumpkin yogurt concoction that Kath has on her blog a lot, and was wondering what type of yogurt everyone likes. I think she said to use a plain non or low fat variety.

    Jenna,
I am one of the co-founders of Urbaniti Online Magazine (we launch our first issue March 1st), and we basically focus on all things in Philadelphia, our demographic is 17-45. I am the Restaurants&Food editor. I was reading about your group “French Women Don’t Get Fat” and I was wondering if there was any way that I could interview you for the article I’m writing about the French diet and why they don’t have the obesity problem that we have in the United States. If you could e-mail me back, that would be great, and I could tell you more about the magazine and everything. Thanks so much!

    Hi Anne P:

I use the Fage 2% or the Fage 0%…. It is reallly creamy and thick and also very filling… seems to be the kind that almost everyone loves the most!!! (at least the Fage 0%)

    Erica,

That bread has a pretty outstanding nutritional profile. I like it…but like everything else, I prefer to switch back and forth between different brands. It def. has a “healthy” taste to it! Very nutty, actually.

Oh no! I hope your camera stops acting up on you. Maybe it’s just having a bad day!

I tried the Tofurkey for lunch today (also with lettuce and honey mustard). It was so good! I’m also shocked at how similar it is to turkey.

Jenna, all this talk lately of vegan “cheese” and toasted sandwiches put me in the mood for a good ol’ grilled cheese! I tried vegan cheeze today for lunch in my grilled cheese but added some tomatoes, spinach, mustard, hot sauce, cooked onions, and carrot and it was AMAZING. You’ve really inspired me to stop eating lunch meats, they’re really kind of gross when you think about it…..

Have a great day! I can not WAIT to give your mom’s cabbage recipe a try!

    Afternoon ladies!

That’s terrible about your camera Jenna-you should try taking it to a camera repair shop. Although I’ve heard that sometimes it ends up being more expensive to fix something then to just buy a new one!

Meghan-your grilled cheese sandwich sounds amazing. I’m literally drooling right now!

I don’t know about everybodies eating habits, but I find personally that during the week I eat really well and exercise and then during the weekend I completely fall off the wagon and eat and drink terribly (we’re talking-it’s 3 in the morning, I’ve been drinking since 7 and suddenly I’m eating 3 huge pieces of pizza!) If I’m balancing really good weeks with terrible weekends, am I doing that much damage to my body? Obviously I won’t be losing any weight, but as long as I average it out (say eat 1500 calories a day during the week to average out my 3000 calorie a day weekends) will I gain weight?

i don’t know! i actually have the same problem (eating too much on the weekend.) does anyone have a great tip to avoid such behavior? i’m in high school and the weekend is when friends get together for movies and pizza parties galore! REALLY ruins my diet (trying to lose 10 lbs)!! but i don’t want to say no b/c i love hanging out with my friends. but when we hang it’s like “what to do for dinner? pizza!” or “let’s go to Burger King!” *shudder* i always try to order healthier versions but then there’s always dessert! any tips?

thanks jenna! i love the ezekiel brand as a whole (the english muffins and tortillas are my favorite!), so i’m going to give the bread a try. what are some of your other suggestions in terms of different breads aside from rudi’s honey sweet wheat? thanks!!

aw I hope your camera is ok! If it turns out it is indeed broken, I have a really old digital camera that’s been sitting in my drawer for a year and a half that you could have if you want. It works fine, but it’s enormous, haha. anyway, my email is ellebllehs@gmail.com. holler if you need a dinosaur camera to keep the blog going 🙂

Hey girls!! I know we’ve covered this topic ten bagillion times, but does anyone have a recommendation on a good peanut butter? The whole foods in Los Angeles is really inconvenient to me, so I usually go to Trader Joe’s. Favorite brands? Let me know! Also, to continue the Lara Bar conversation from breakfast, not only are they DELICIOUS but the company is amazing! Every year at my college we do Relay For Life to raise money for cancer research, and they consistently donate 1500 bars to our event! They’re the best! So keep supporting them! Thanks girls (and guys?)

SDF and Ana, I have the same problem with weekends! However, I found I was able to maintain my weight for 4 years eating healthy during the week and over-doing it on the weekends. It’s only recently that I’ve started eating more healthy on the weekends and only going out once a weekend or every other weekend that I’ve started to gain weight. Now explain that!

    Hi everyone,
I was hoping to get some recommendations for everyone’s favorite honey mustard brand.

I have a harder time with my eating on weekends as well. I find it really helps if I wake up at a reasonable hour (ie not sleep until noon) and start the day with a healthy breakfast. Weekdays are extremely scheduled for me so my eating is not erratic. I find it helps if I try to keep some structure when I’m off with both sleep and meal times. I also try to go with the flow as much as possible. If I’m out, I do the best I can to order something both healthy and tasty. It doesn’t have to be perfect and I would never want to miss out on time with friends b/c the food is not healthy enough! I also know that come Monday, I will be back to oatmeal breakfast and brown bag lunch.

i think the weekend over eating is pretty common, i know it happens to me!
jenna are you being affected by these power outages? cheers!

Alli W. – I love the trader joes crunchy salted peanut butter, its my fav!

About the ezekiel bread… i just got the whole wheat kind last week and i kind of dont like it because its not as chewy as regular whole wheat bread. Everyone raves about the ezekiel breads so i had to try it haha. I had been eating the trader joes brand whole wheat bread which had 6 grams of fiber and i might go back to that, or give the sesame ezekiel a try.

I do like the ezekiel cereal though. I guess it just depends on preference.

Alli W. – I like the trader joe’s brand of natural peanut butter. Have you tried that?

SDF – I think a good general rule for your diet is healthy eating 80% of the time and the other 20% enjoying yourself with foods you wouldn’t normally eat. So maybe Saturday you let your eating be more carefree. But, alcohol adds up QUICKLY so be careful there!

Sorry to hear your camera isn’t working! Mine died on me, and I have no idea why… gr… hate it when that happens.

Kate, I think your attitude is great – what you said about not wanting to miss out on time with your friends just because the food doesn’t meet your normal standards should be a motto to live by! It just shows a lot of balance, which ultimately makes for happier and healthier people, mentally and physically!

My favorite honey mustard is by Stonewall Kitchen. In fact, I love all their spreads, dips and jams. http://www.stonewallkitchen.com. they have a sweet honey mustard and a spicy kind. And their pink grapefruit marmalade rocks!

Ana & SDF: here’s my tips (though I wish I followed them more strictly):

-only DRINK one night a week (still go out, just don’t drink..or just have 1)
    -work out..hard…on the splurge day(s)
-take advantage of opportunities to move more! dance, strut around in your heels, take the stairs, do active stuff! (the more i drink the more i move haha) seriously, this is how i actually LOST weight my fresh. yr.
-eat mainly lean protein & lots of veg. during the day. The protein & fiber will keep you full for the least amount of calories..and alcohol & late-night food is pretty much solely carbs (taco c. & whataburger for you Texans)

-As for Ana the high schooler, my main advice is to have fun and make the best of your hs years – and to focus on eating healthy & well-balanced when you can and when all that other junk food is around, hopefully you won’t be famished b/c you’ll have eaten nutritious and filling food throughout the day and so you will be less likely to eat TONS of the junk!

I know it’s nothing y’all haven’t heard before, but sometimes it helps just to hear it from someone else! 🙂 good luck..spring break in 1.5 weeks for meeeeee!!!!!!! yay.
