Behind The Butter

You Lose With Mr.Booze

I almost thought the coast was clear. I really wanted to blog to y’all tonight that you could have your cake and eat it too…..or, in my case, go to a wine tasting and then run five miles.

It was going so well. Really. After I got home from lunch / dog hunting / wine tasting, I did some work, ate a Trader Joe’s granola bar and hit the road for five. I didn’t run at all over the weekend so I wanted to get a solid five miles in before the weather turns tomorrow. The run was good, too! Obviously now we all know my dirty little secret and I recommend you try it yourself. It makes the whole running thing a lot less painful. I promise.
When I got back, I ate dinner (Amy’s Indian meal + feta….obviously) and iced. Still was feelin’ pretty darn good at this point.

Until about 8:15 when my head started to bang. And I mean bang. I guess Cabernet Franc isn’t the best pre-run hydration method? Who knew. I tried to remedy this issue by concocting a healthy frozen confection in the VitaMix.

IMG_6752
It was delicious….but didn’t cure my headache. All I did was puree a frozen banana with a half scoop of chocolate protein powder. I topped this deliciousness with the last teeny bit of my almond butter as well as some random graham cracker crumbs that were supposed to be the topping for a cheesecake flavored yogurt in my fridge.

Anyone who’s anyone drinks and eats out of old glass jars. Actual bowls and matching cups are highly overrated. I assure you.
Does anyone want to gently massage my temples? That would be greatly appreciated right about now. As my old boss would say, you lose with mr. booze!

aww jenna HYDRATE! I love that you eat/drink out of old glass jars, it’s so charming. I save the good ones too, I think it adds a little something something to eating. This is also coupled with my obsession for buying cute plates/bowls/spoons. Hey, makes things more interesting right? Take care girl, and looks like you put those gram crackers to an even better use because that looks fantastic!

I love drinking out of jars–especially because it’s spill proof with the lid on. That way it can be like a portable water/iced coffee/wine bottle.

Totally agree with Nora…my worst headaches come from being dehydrated. How funny you drink out of jars…I would have never thought of that but why not? It makes sense since it’s spill-proof!

When I was a kid the jelly jars used to have pictures (Winnie the Pooh) and we saved all of them and drank out of them after. All of the “kids” glasses were old jelly jars. I don’t think I ever drank from a real glass until I was 10 or so because if I didn’t use the jelly jars I used tupperware (bright colors).

I definitely employ your running style of stopping frequently from walking breaks. It keeps my stamina up and has helped decrease my shin splints and other various running-related aches.

Speaking of aches, sorry to hear you were slammed with a headache! Drink up, as in…water!

Hi Jenna – love this post, as I’ve definitely ran after having a few afternoon drinks. I mean, really, what’s the harm in it? Maybe some coconut water mixed in there for hydration would have helped? (That’s my go-to hangover drink haha)

Also – about your headaches – any chance it could be the chocolate that causes them? I used to get migraines (horrrrible ones that would make me throw up and be in bed all day), and then one year, a few days post-valentines day and chocolate overload, I was laying in bed with one and acknowledged the unthinkable – chocolate gives me migraines. I should have known, as its on every “causes of migraines” list, but for 24 years I skipped over that one, blaming dairy, stress, wine, etc… Since I gave up chocolate (I know, the horror), I’ve had two bad migraines in the past two years, probably just caused from waiting too long btwn meals (which always triggers headaches for me, too). I know I’ll always be prone to headaches, but getting those migraines out of my life has been pretty amazing. I hope this isn’t the case for you, but maybe worth trying?

I really enjoy drinking from glass jars- I have actually purchased some with handles, too ($2 at a craft store). I put my green monsters in them and then top with a canning lid to transport to work. So far, no one has asked what the green stuff is that I am drinking!

Jenna, I’ll share with you something from my Great Grandmother, and have many hooked on this as well, sounds goofy but it works and when I have a nasty migraine I’ll try anything, after popping my headache meds, in my case excedrin migraine, I soak a wash cloth with rubbing alcohol and lay it on my forehead, it soothes you to sleep and you’ll wake up with it gone, works everytime, Btw, bell jars are good for just about everything…..

Also, at my house I ONLY drink out of glass jars. I have tons of mason jars floating around from the canned sauce my dad makes for me and they are my favorite things to drink out of!! I’ll admit that I’ve never actually bought a set of cups in my life. Happens to the best of us! I once ate a Big Mac the evening before I was in a half marathon. Other people could have handled this but my body was not used to red meat. I was so sluggish and sick from it, we still laugh about my pre-run meal (in my defense I did have a pasta dinner later)!!!

I have 2 small children, and I stay at home with them. Come 5pm (or earlier), wine is NECESSARY. Not an option. Sometimes running is also needed when the husband gets home. It’s a tough call, so there is often wine, then a run, then water, and more wine. I like to call that The Perfect Evening.
