Mental health day was a success! I won’t go into too much detail, but there were pedicures and trashy magazines involved.
It was amazing.
You know what was even more amazing though?

heyo
Gosh, today was CRAZY! Is it totally horrible of me to say I think its worth it to work Barrel Tasting just to see everyone’s outfits alone??! I definitely saw some crazy stuff today. Very amusing. I will never understand why so many girls wear the tiniest dresses + stiletto heels when wine tasting….hmmmm just seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

I can’t wait to taste that Tazo tea! I’m glad stevia is hitting mainstream
mmm that pizza looks yummy! Anything with olives
:D
Also..I just showed the bacon wrapped jalapeno pulled pork poppers to my man..and he totally wants to recreate those!
Those peppers look amazing. You are lucky to have neighbors who cook like that!
Your pizza looks AMAZING!
your pizza looks AMAZING
Those peppers look amazing!!! How could one food encompass so many great foods? I agree: my tea must have REAL sugar or honey or agave.
oh i must try that tazo tea, i LOVE the regular hot version they carry at sbux, so good!
Wow, quite the gourmet bbq ; )
Ohhhhhh myyyyyyyy gahhhhhhhhh. I feel so bad for vegetarians…no back wrapped anything! That looks amazingggg!
Hope you get lots of rest tonight dear! Sometimes you just have to stay in and rest
That pziza looks amazing! I have to try the new Tazo tea – I really like the Stevia taste and I much prefer cold to hot tea.
Ew that last picture looks horrible..I’m not one for bacon!! I like the sound of the pizza though
wow how pretty. i usually really dislike bacon but….there you go. i just said it was pretty.
saturdays are all about letting yourself relax, right?
a bientot
the pfb
I’m kinda of laughing that one commenter thinks the bacon looks horrible and the next thinks it is pretty. Can’t please them all, I guess
I need to look for those teas, I use stevia as my sweetener of choice.
Food looks amazinggg!
I would have had fun checking out the outfits, too! lol
And those stuffed jalapenos… drooool. Wow, they look amazing!
xo
K
I LOVE stuffed jalepenos!!! Wrapped in bacon is even better!
I don’t think I could turn down that deliciousness either.
I’ll be looking out for the Tazo tea.
My dad would be in love with those jalapeno poppers.
bacon? jalapeno peppers? pulled pork. it’s 9 am and i would eat one now. wine tasting in stilettos is classic…stupidity!
Those bacon wrapped jalepenos look amaazing!!!
Bacon wrapped jalapeno peppers stuffed with pulled pork and cream cheese? YES PLEASE!
Those stuffed jalapenos look like a Paula Dean creation! So over-the-top delicious. Actually, all of your eats today look delicious. Pesto+Pizza=Winner. That combo can do no wrong in my book.
I think I only really have one thing to say… YUM!!
That pizza looked AMAZING!! Wish I had a piece right now to eat for breakfast!
The peppers! What a great idea! that is one of those things that I would never order or make myself but know I would love.
Hope you have an amazing day!
OH my goodness what a glorious creation! I love anything with pulled pork and a little heat! Delicious!
Have a great Sunday!
Sounds like a fun day! Those jalapeño poppers look dangerous:)
at first i thought the jalapenos were stuffed dates! those r soooo good too i dunno if youve tried them. but dates stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped with bacon/prosciutto! delish!
Everything you had today looks great! I have a friend who makes poppers stuffed with Chorizo, cream cheese and shredded mexi blend cheese…wrapped in bacon! They have been the hit of the parties for the last couple years!
And I love to people watch! Sometimes it is hard to not laugh right at them! Have fun today!
OMG those stuffed peppers look amazing! And people watching is a blast…it can’t be a bad thing!
The hubby and I just made those peppers (sans pork, just cream cheese stuffed) last night on the grill. Nom nom nom…
I WANT those peppers.
You are so right, heels and short skirts do not go well at wine tastings. Besides, who wants to sit on a bar stool in a skirt? Too uncomfortable. Anywho, that pizza looks amazing, I was actually just wondering if feta could go on a pizza and I think the answer is Yes!
Sounds like a delicious day to me
The jalapenos look amazing!!!! I wish I had the recipe =)
That was cracking me up about the girls in mini dresses with high heels…totally agree and honestly I am just mean enough to laugh when they fall!!! haha!
That pizza looks so good! And you’re right, moderation is definitely key.
“Bacon wrapped jalapeno peppers stuffed with pulled pork and cream cheese.” That’s just evil genius. Your neighbor timed it so you’d come down, partake and write about it, and have 1M strangers vicariously licking their laptop screens. It’s all a plot to go big on release at TJ’s. bwaaahahahhaha.
Here’s the recipe for the bacon-wrapped jalapenos: http://tinyurl.com/oe4ezq
wow, i’ve never had jalapenos with pulled pork in them! that sounds like a trainwreck waiting to happen for me…
hope your sunday is awesome!
It’s so much fun to watch people drink too much in standing-room-only dresses and sitting-room-only heels! Though I am possibly jealous at those that can pull it off, because I lack the necessary grace to do so…
Wow, you are one busy busy girl!! i can imagine that the wine tasting would be very interesting, indeed
Wow that pizza looks good!! haha and yes I agree – ehy short skirts and stillettos to a wine tasting?! Very strange!
looked like a really yummy pizza. I love anything Mediterranean.
Those jalapenos look awesome. Who thought to stuff them will pulled pork? Genius!!
oh those peppers are a dream come true for me! YUM;)
oh those peppers look so good! i hope you enjoyed them….i know i would have:)
I’d go for the pizza. olives and feta, yum.
PIZZAAAAAAA! Argh – there’s no resisting it.
What’s your favorite thing to bake or cook Jenna? I assume since your book is based on recipes and stuff – it’s a ‘passion’ of yours? Would you ever like to be solely in the kitchen? Or do you like the combination with writing and other stuff….?
That pizza looks amazing!! Your boss rocks:) So does your neighbor!
Have a great night!
That last pic of you is stunning…and professional-looking. As in ‘author page’ quality : )
Glad you had a good day!
Jenna, you look gorgeous in this photos! I am loving your hair at the moment – I may well copy your fringe once my wedding up-do hair is out of the way!
Julia
x
I TOTALLY agree
Glad to hear you had a great day of R&R with wonderful food! This reminds me of the EXACT thing I get from a place called Dinosaur BBQ at home. Slow smoked pork with their signature cole slaw, beans and corn bread…did I mention the beans are the good ones cooked with bacon. HEAVEN. You look beautiful your date was very lucky
LOL I love that you compared your toes to pulled pork. Classic
bahah
Looks like a GREAT day – I love it!
what does the bf think of cali bbq vs. texas? BTW can we just talk about how gorgeous your skin/face/hair/everything is?!?!
I love BBQ and that looks delicious. I agree with you, moderation is the key!
So true! You are the first blogger I started reading and you really motivated and inspired me to get this moderation thing in gear
Thanks!
OK, when you say NC pulled pork – is it REALLY NC style? do they use a vinegar sauce or tomato based? My NC man wants to know and might be willing to drive to Sonoma County for this.
It’s hard to be some downhome comfort food sometimes!
I have not had cornbread with honey forever – so good! I totally beleive in moderation as well. Just remember to treat your body with respect by staying active and feeding it good food (occasional BBQ and chocolate cookies included)!
Glad your mental health day helped! I’ll be taking the GRE later tonight so I’m pretty sure I’m classifying this entire weekend as my mental health day(s).
It’s true, mental health days (and BBQ) are truly soul soothing. Glad you took some time for yourself. Sometimes it seems selfish, but it’s the only way you can serve others.
Southern BBQ looks so amazing right now. Why am I stuck in the office with no food?!!
That’s a pretty picture of you.
FYI this post did not show-up on Google Reader for me; sometimes it seems to miss some of your posts – not sure why!
It always surprises me (and saddens me) when I hear that people think there is only one good and healthy way to eat. And if you stray from that in any way you must turn in your “healthy” eating card. (it also bums me out that people feel the need to ‘call you out’ publicly, but i guess that’s to be expected)
What I love about this blog, Jenna, is your complete zeal for life, you ability to face devastating loss and continue celebrating your own life. That’s what healthy living is. It’s not about the food.
keep it up, girl.

Jenna,
Happy Mental Health day!
I am curious to hear what your parents have to say about the JetBlue flight attendant who used the evaculation slide. Do they think his dramatic exit was warranted or that he should be kept in jail? Do tell.
Jenna, it must be said: You’re TOO gorgeous!
Anywho, pedicures, honey topped cornbread, and chocolate chip cookies should be integrated in the treatment of clinically depressed people. How could those three things not lift someone’s spirits?
Mental health days are some of my favorite days EVA. Glad you enjoyed yours
oh and that cookie…must. bake. tomorrow.
Yumm…. & Tapatio too? Perfection.
Pedicures and BBQ? It sounds too good to be true : )
Glad you enjoyed your mental health day, trashy magazines are usually involved in mine too
Dinner looks yummy!
Haha love that face
There’s no such thing as moderation when it comes to BBQ, pedicures and trashy mags.
so therapeutic! i applaud the mental health day
i think they should be built into regular work schedules.
My favorite post ever.
It included Almanzo story, the beautiful YOU, and just plain ol’ eats and love and life.
YOU are treasured and loved, my sweet little sis!!!
XOXO
Pol
great mental health day. now if they’d only bring some legit BBQ up to new england.
Um yeah. I need to start making pedicures and pulled pork part of my mental health days! Im glad you photograhed the tapatio – that stuff rocks my world. Yay for texans who love bbq. Cant wait to see where he takes you in austin!
I love beans as a side dish – to pork is even better.
I think your day was a success.
Yaaaay for mental health day!! I like your style, I think pulled pork has to be one of my all time favorite things in the world… nothing like it! And the cornbread, WOW, that looked amazing!
It is so important to take time for yourself, kudos to you!!
What’s better for mental health than some BBQ in the summertime? Nothing.
Oh man, I haven’t had bbq in so long…it’s a lot less fun as a vegetarian
Gorgeous pix of you! Saving the world one pedicure & plate of barbque at a time. If the poor maxed-out JFK flight attendant had followed suit we wouldn’t be reading about his f-bombs, swiped beer, jumping the ‘chute and landing in jail. Just sayn’.
Pedicures and BBQ sounds like an amazing combo – glad it worked as a mental health day!
I just made caramel corn with a kick using tapatio last night!
You can take the girl out of the south…
Yes, everything in moderation. This is a concept I have been trying to put into practice for over a dozen years and I feel like finally, at 29 and not a moment to soon, I am starting to live it. And I feel fantastic!
Great looking BBQ for not being in the South. I need to go out one more time this week before leaving Charleston for Colorado.
Your hair looks really pretty.
I need a mental health day too, for pedis, trashy mags… and lots of TRASHY TV.
Real Housewives is calling my name…
This comment needs a ‘like’ button that I can click! Real Housewives is my guilty pleasure but I don’t have cable. I am not ashamed to say this results in on-demand-loss-of-brain-cell real housewives marathons at my parents’ house
Mental health day looks like a success, you look gorgeous and rested!
OMG that food looks A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! I need to move to Texas LOL. You look really pretty on those pics!!
That cornbread looks amazing!
It’s NOT about everything in moderation.
I thought this was a blog about healthy eating but does not seem to be.
I completely agree – this blog is not what it once was and the title is very misleading and inappropriate given Jenna’s indulgent lifestyle (run?) and eating habits. Why do you insist on telling readers how “moderate” you are re. your “occasional” eating frenzies? Why not just be honest re. your eating style…it is in no way similar to that of “healthy lifestyle bloggers.”
I’m sorry you feel that way—I’ve never pretended this is a diet blog. I went to school for pastry and baking for goodness sake! I’ve also always stressed the importance of eating everything in moderation and balancing it all out with an active lifestyle. There are many “healthier” blogs out there though that you might find more pleasing!
Hi Jenna,
I’ve been reading (read: lurking) for a few weeks (love your writing style–so entertaining!!) and I just wanted to comment on this thread because this blog (and others) have really been examples to me of a healthy lifestyle. For many years I thought I was being “healthy” by eschewing all things sugar and fat, and running a (self-imposed) minimum of 10 miles a day. Now I am learning that being healthy can (and should) involve allowing myself the freedom to enjoy the foods I once considered forbidden and focusing on things besides my daily workouts. It might even include taking a day off from running. Is this a blog about a weightloss driven health NUT? No. Is it an example of a person who consciously leads a healthy lifestyle while simultaneously enjoying her life? Absolutely. Thanks for reminding us that there’s more to life than daily runs and healthy adaptations of dessert recipes.
P.S. re: “run?” I, for one, am not necessarily interested in reading daily updates about other people’s workouts. Furthermore, their absence in a blog does not signify their absence in the author’s life.
I’m sorry, but a healthy lifestyle for one person/blogger does not necessarily correspond to what is considered a healthy lifestyle for another blogger. Just because there are certain trends in the healthy food blog sphere (ie. oatmeal…), doesn’t mean that another food blogger who strays from that norm no longer fits into the healthy lifestyle category.
A healthy lifestyle incorporates activity and nourishing fuel. That said, the everything in moderation realm of thinking embraces health. Obsessing about calories and indulgent eats is not reflective of a healthy individual. No, I’m not advocating eating indulgent foods ALL the time… again, it’s all about moderation.
Deprivation is not healthy.
Jenna-
I was originally interested in reading your blog for the sheer fact that your “food philosophy” spoke to me (if you will). I have struggled my lifetime with periods of binge/restrictive eating, and i was so excited to finally find someone that actually ATE but still looked good doing it. it has been my savior, a number of times because as you say “moderation is key”. you have to pick and choose your indulgences, and not give in for just any ‘ol cookie/threesome with your guys ben&jerry…it needs to be worth it. that is exactly what you do. you never read about you having something and it was “just sub-par, but i ate it anyway”. all your eats are “delicious” and “the best”, but still in moderation. I say to just walk away from all these nay-sayers and just keep ‘doin what you’re doing lady!!!
I like to think that nothing makes a girl feel more relaxed than a mani/pedi. Getting one today and I am so excited. Cookies don’t hurt either.
Mental health days should be mandatory every once in awhile. I’d channel Giselle (in words alone) and say that they should be a law, but I don’t want to risk being seen as out of touch
Missing bbq. As an adopted Southerner (with a Georgia boy by my side), being up North for the summer, sans pulled-anything, just feels wrong.
you are so pretty! and you know he’s a good catch when he takes you to a great BBQ place
First of all, Jenna, that picture of you is priceless! I started laughing out loud when I saw it! Ah-mazing!
Your post made me crave a local joint of my own, City Barbeque. My birthday is this weekend and I told the hubby that’s what I wanted for my birthday dinner. What a yummy place!
Mental health days are always welcomed. Being in retail I rarely get one, but when I do they are cherished. Hope today is just as great as yesterday.
mmmm TapatÃo hot sauce!!! I lived in Guadalajara, Mexico, where that sauce originates, and I eat it on everything!!
Hey Jenna! I’m sorry you have to deal with these rude comments…I totally 110% agree in the everything in moderation rule. I used to be so strict with my diet and would end up binging…you know how that whole cycle goes!! It left me feeling miserable and depressed….but once I started reading your blog and others, I realized I can eat real food and indulge, in moderation, and still maintain a healthy weight and be happy! So a huge thanks to you for showing everyone that you can eat real food without deprivation and still be healthy and happy! ; )
I also have to say you look beautiful and extremely happy in that picture, good for you! And btw, I really like your hair that length! ; )
I have just recently begun to read this blog and I like it! I’m not a baker, but I’ve seen some great ideas for foods that I would like to try. You seem like a cool person, Jenna!
With that being said, I do not think that it is rude for someone to disagree with the author. Is it really the end of the world if someone thinks that this blog isn’t a healthy eating blog? I don’t think so. If dissent sparks discussion, it can be healthy.
Rock On Jenna……
Our society is warped…our views on food are irrational…good for you!!! It isn’t rocket science! Most people just deprive and deprive themselves so much, then they binge…don’t know how to moderate… most people have not been taught about moderation in their live…you are an inspiration to many women I’m sure…keep it up girl!!
Thank God for Texans. Or one in particular, right
And that pic of you is so beautiful. And you know I’m talking about the one with your cheeks puffed out. Bahahahahaha!
That picture of you underneath the hot sauce is so gorgeous! So excited for the growth of ELR, such an inspiration!
life is about growth and indulging while taking care of ourselves. for those who are upset because your posts aren’t about workouts or salads, but real life enjoyment, there are many other blogs out there for them to read.
