Get Warm With Amy

Good morning!

Well, this morning I woke up at 5 a.m. with a start and after laying in bed for an hour trying to fall back asleep I just figured it was useless and decided to get an early start to my day. Does that happen to anyone else??! I think I finally caught myself up on sleep and now I’m back to normal.

Had an early breakfast as well!

My favorite! I used 1/2 cup oats, 1 cup water, 1 small banana, 2 tsp maca, 1/2 scoop protein powder, cinnamon and pumpkin butter….it hit the spot.

***

It’s FREEZING outside and what better excuse to give away soup???!

We love Amy’s over here at ELR and apparently they love y’all. So much so that they have offered to giveaway a gift pack containing three soups to one lucky reader. You’ll get what I’ve been enjoying for the past couple weeks—the chunky tomato bisque, fire roasted veggie and hearty Spanish rice and bean. All three are absolutely delicious!

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite holiday tradition 🙂 I’ll pick a random winner tonight when I get home from dinner and post it in the morning.

Tis the season!

I love Amy’s soups and these flavors sound awesome! My favorite holiday tradition is sitting under the tree on Christmas morning with my family and my husband. We turn on a really bright light for videotaping, and my brother makes a fire in the fireplace, and we play soft Christmas music. The bright light, fire, music, and the twinkling tree lights are such a magical combination — it feels like we’ve been transported to a fantasy world for the day. The best part of all is just sitting there and being together for hours on end as we exchange presents, play games, and play with our pets. How often do families get to just BE TOGETHER . . . FOR HOURS ON END? I love it so much.

My favorite holiday tradition is Wassail Fest, which takes place in the center of my town. All the main street merchants and store owners make and serve free wassail, and the public gets to vote on who makes it best. It’s cozy and delicious, and a great way to see the town and all the people that live in it!

My fave xmas tradition is cooking in the kitchen with my mom. We go “untraditional” by making a mixed Vietnamese/American potluck meal ranging from beef & eggroll vermicelli to chicken wings and fudge brownies! The past few years I love playing “White Elephant” with the future in-laws and their friends. Everyone has their way of playing White Elephant but we do a combo old + new gifts.

I come from a very traditional Italian family and ever since I can remember we have been doing the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve. Seriously, hands down the best holiday tradition out there. We have everything from baccala, smelts, crab, scallops, shrimp, lobster (yum), and oysters. I was raised on this food. We combined it with red wine, and Sinatra in the background, that is truly the best holiday tradition.

Visiting the folks on Christmas Eve to exhnage presents, drink wine, eat finger foods, play Sorry (yes, I realize the game is for ages 6 and up, HA) and then watching bad Christmas Movies. I also get the pleasure of watching my Papa desperately climb under the tree every year to make sure we got every single last present from under there. The man loves Christmas more then Ralphie loves an official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock, and this thing which tells time.

On Christmas morning, the whole family sits at the top of the steps while my dad goes down to the living room to see what mess Santa (or even Rudolph in some years) has left! Sometimes he even finds him sleeping on the couch. It only took a few years for us to realize he was actually eating the cookies. But we’re grown and married now, so the spouses sit with us, too! And we all enjoy the time with family!

I really love Christmas Eve Mass. It’s at my hometown church and I see all the kids I grew up with and the music is always fantastic. We have to arrive over an hour early to stake out seats and there’s a trumpeter that plays carols beforehand while we wait.

Also, do you ever worry about hot things in plastic containers (i.e. oatmeal)? I heard heat causes toxins in the plastic to release but that could be false…?

My hubby and I are HUGE christmas fanatics. We have 3 trees, and are planning on getting more (i have a dream of putting a tree in every room). We usually cannot make it until after Thanksgiving to decorate. We turn on the christmas tunes, put up the trees, the lights on the porch, and start baking. He loves to make homemade turtles and i’m a peppermint bark fan. My hubby is not a huge cook or baker, but its the one time of year where he joins me in the kitchen. And he gets so excited decorating the house with me! I love it! I just know when we have kids one day it will be a weekend event for us and I can’t wait!

And I’ve been looking for Amy’s soups in my grocery store. I haven’t found them yet but I will keep looking if I do or don’t win! They sound fabulous!

On Christmas morning when my family opens presents my mom will ring a bell every time a new present it being opened. This way, we only open one present at a time and the bell ensures that everyone is watching and “ooh-ing” and “ahh-ing”. She actually uses the very same bell that her father rang when the did this tradition during her childhood. I love this tradition because it makes each and every present special and it elongates the present opening process. It also leaves time for hugs to family members who have given that particular present! I will definitely be passing down this tradition to my children one day!

My favorite tradition is on Christmas Eve. We all go to the church where we grew up and first watch the Chritmas pagent. We then head home and eat a huge ham dinner. We then head back out and go to the church my Grandmother was raised in. After that service we head out back to the graveyard and place wreaths on my grandparents headstones. We then head back to our church to attend Midnight Mass and listen to some of the most beautiful music. The best part is when the lights are turned down and everyone has a lit candle and we sing Silent Night.

Its falling apart a bit and the fuzzy pages are getting a little worn… but it is fun, even though we are all now in our 30’s. I started dating my hubby in high school, I’ve been around for awhile so this has been a tradition for about half my life!

    Awesome, love those soups!
My fave Christmas tradition is just being with my family. I live about 6 hours away and it seems as much as I try to create Christmas where I’m at, it doesn’t truly feel like the holiday until I have stepped foot inside my parent’s home.
I can’t wait to see them this year!

I love love love love that my family watches about 9 hours of the 24 hour “A Christmas Story” marathon each year and that we put a DVD of a log fire, so that it looks like we have an actual fireplace. That’s how you get in to the holiday spirit down here in Florida! 🙂 I’m sure you understand, hahaha

On Christmas eve, my family orders Chinese food. We try to make Christmas eve mass (after all, who really wants to leave home on Christmas morning?), and no one wants to cook a big dinner two nights in a row, so we tried Chinese as pure convenience. It’s stuck, and now I look forward to our quirky Christmas eves. 🙂

My family continues to gather on the living room couch by the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve to read Twas the Night Before Christmas. My family is very involved in the music ministry at our church, so we don’t get to relax and unwind until very late – after the 11pm service. Even though my siblings and I are all grown-up – ages 24-30 – we still squeeze the whole family – 6 adults – onto the couch and read Christmas stories!! Most fun ever.

So many things have changed over the years. I actually painted my house on Christmas Day 2 years ago! I was getting ready to move in, and we were having our family celebration on a different day (the day that they all helped me move!). But the one constant over the years is spending time w/family. Like one (or more) commented, it’s the one time of the year that you can almost guarantee to see your extended family.

As long as I can remember my family plays trivial pursuit on Christmas night while we eat Christmas cookies and homemade chex mix. It somehow turned into an annual tradition many many years ago and we have lots of funny stories about playing. It’s also tradition for my Uncle to moan and groan all night about how much he hates the game and doesn’t want to play even though he wouldn’t miss it for the world and then he always answers at least one question for the other team.

I think my favorite would have to be how we give the kids their new jammies the night before and the next morning trek over to my parents in our jammies and wait for my grandparents to come over. The feeling of anticipation….waiting for the family…smells of brunch….ah I can’t wait. 🙂

Hey Jenna! My favorite holiday tradition is a unusual one– it’s a German (my family has German roots). Ever since I was little, my parents would hide an ornament that looks like a pickle (yes, a pickle) on the tree and my three siblings and I would race each other to find it. Whomever found it received a small chocolate bar. I think the pickle represents luck for the new year. I always thought it was just my family, but I guess many people do it too (you can look it up online).

Thanks so much for your blog– as a college student, health nut, and fellow southerner, I find it so inspirational!

My fiance started a new tradition last year that we hope to continue into our marriage and with our kids. We are Jewish, so we give 7 small gifts for the first 7 nights of Hannukah and then a big gift on the 8th night. We light the candles every night together before exchanging gifts. We also started an annual Hannukah party with friends that I hope we host every year. Sometimes it’s intimate and other times it”s more of an open house type.

My family (mom, dad, sister, grandma, and I) always exchange gifts late night on Christmas Eve. We start when the Christmas Eve guests leave my parents’ house around 11, and usually don’t end up going to bed until 1 or 2 am. We’re a little sleepy on Christmas Day, but its a tradition we’ve had since I was little and couldn’t fall asleep from all the excitement!

My favorite holiday tradition is when my husband’s parents ask for a memory written down instead of a gift. Everyone in the family agrees on a topic and we all write our memories down (grandparents, for example). We make enough copies for everyone, and have an evening where we read them altogether. We’ve done it the past few years, and it has been so special and not commercialized. Love it!

I have many favorites for the holidays…but the one I’ll never let go of is on the afternoon of Christmas Eve to visit one of the nine California Mission’s and light a ton of candles for my son’s father/my first boyfriend at age 15 who I married at 17. He died young and his b-day is Christmas Eve. I think of him everyday and especially on his birthday. The church is beautiful, quiet and decorated for Midnight Mass…and looks beautiful with lots of candles lit just for him.

My favorite holiday tradition? Well, I was born and raised in southern California. My parents started taking my sisters and I to the beach every Christmas morning when we were really young, and it has stuck. So I would have to say that my favorite holiday tradition is going to beach on Christmas morning with a bag of bread to feed to the seagulls. Then walking along the beach and filling that bag up with trash that has been washed up on the beach. Great way to start the day!

My favorite holiday tradition is definitely the dinner I have with my family on Christmas Eve. We call it “walk around the table.” My mom makes a whole bunch of different finger foods and puts them on the table buffet-style. We all walk around the table and then eat in the living room around the Christmas tree while watching Christmas movies. It’s awesome!! 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!

I go broke, but Amy’s is always in my kitchen as well, so fun giveaway!
As for traditions, I am the only grandkid out of 56 that knows how to make my grandma’s Polish Chrusciki and everyone expects them each year. Even though she can’t do it any more, I still roll, twist out, fry and sprinkle with powdered sugar hundreds each December to take on Christmas Eve.
A lot of work, but worth it just to see my grandma enjoy them (and everyone else, but mostly her).

My favorite holiday tradition is relatively new: With all the food sensitivities in my family, it often takes a long time and some real creativity to figure out what on earth to eat on the Big Day. When we find the perfect dishes — and the process of getting there — that is my favorite holiday tradition.
To give you an idea of what we *can’t* eat: gluten, rice, dairy, eggs, peanuts, meat.
Always a challenge — but always delicious in the end!

Cookie Sunday with my mom’s family. We all go over to my grandparents’ house the Sunday before Christmas and decorate and frost the gingerbread and sugar cut-out cookies my grandma makes. All of my mom’s 7 siblings bring 2-3 cookies/desserts of their own and you pick out whatever you want. The cookie decorating is followed by take-out pizza. A glorious way to start Christmas week!

    Yikes, talk about slim odds.

Anyway, I love how my family always waited until everyone was up on Christmas Day before starting to open presents. That way everyone is together to see how their gift is received. Also helped that parents would see that the toy came out of the box not working and that you did not break it while playing with it. LOL

My favorite holiday tradition has to be the Make-A-Gift my family started about 15 years ago. We all pick someone else’s name and have to make them a gift. It’s always so much fun to see how creative everyone gets and they really put thought into what the person receiving the gift would like. This year I’m making 3-4 different kinds of edible cookie doughs. Who doesn’t like to eat the dough before you bake the cookies… it’s my fav!

Amy’s products are oh so wonderful and tasty! Thanks for this opportunity. :]

My favorite holiday tradition started last year, but I think it has since become an annual one. We do Christmas with both sides of my boyfriend’s family on Christmas Eve (night), then with the other side on Christmas Day. After the second get together, we take a trip somewhere together for a long weekend of relaxing, shopping, eating and love for each other. This way, we get to spend it with our family as well as get alone time for ourselves. This year we’re going to Portland, and I’m so looking forward to it. :]

My favorite holiday tradition is my family’s Christmas Eve routine. When I was growing up, we would go to church on Christmas Eve, and after returning home, every one would get to open 1 gift from under the tree (always PJs for the kids and a family movie for all). Every Christmas we always make bags of fruit and candy. I didn’t get the concept when i was younger (a bag of fruit couldn’t compare to an official Ghostbuster’s ghost trap). My father told me that was the base of what they got every Christmas, sometimes more but never less growing up in rural North Carolina.

However, all I manage to do each year is barely get a tree decorated, race to get all of the presents wrapped, and forget some key ingredient at the grocery store which forces me to find a “substitution” in the pantry…luckily, that part usually works out quite well!

Love your blog, Jenna! I’ve never tried Amy’s soups, I am just now venturing into a really healthy and mostly (hopefully!) organic way of eating. I’ll have to test them out!!

We have TONS of holiday traditions in my family…my sister and I have decorated the tree with tons of homemade ornaments since we were old enough, my parents and sister and I icing a table full of sugar cookies, watching White Christmas and Holiday Inn, The Santa Claus and The Grinch on the days before xmas (our own little countdown!) and then A Christmas Story the day of…We have a little Advent calendar that has little “toys” you take from each box and hang on the day every day of December and then the “star” on Christmas Eve…candelight Mass with the children’s choir singing Silent Night, chicken and spinach christmas eve dinner and croissant, egg, sausage and cheese casserole christmas morning, pb christmas trees in our stockings! The list goes on!! My favorite has to be everyone taking naps on the couch after the “totally exhausting” Christmas morning ordeal of opening presents and eating tons of food!

Have a great holiday and keep up the great work on your blog! you definitely have a new reader!!!

When the kids were all at home, we would start the Christmas season by going to the tree lighting downtown in our little town of 1500. The town band would play and people would stand and sing carols on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Our tree would be chosen from a tree farm and we would all go and cut it down together, usually throwing snowballs as we went. One memorable year the tree slid of the top of the van as we drove it home! After Dad got the lights on the tree (which was not the fun part), The kids would take the angel topper out and give her a kiss and then one child would put her on top with Dad’s help. The the ornaments would be spread out on the table and we would all decorate the tree together with old fashions for the adults and cider or hot chocolate for the kids. The kids always had favorite ornaments to place and Christmas music would play all through the process. The final decoration was always the popcorn that had been strung years before and saved carefully. Fun times.
