OBSESSED!!!!!!!
Okay, so yeah…new camera came around 7:00 (can you even BELIEVE it?!) and I’ve been fiddling around with it ever since. I know from an artsy-photographer standpoint, I’m not doing anything right because I’m still shooting like its a point and shoot and I’m using a lot of flash….but I’ll get the hang of it. I might just stay up all night reading the instruction manual and tomorrow be a total pro. You never know. This makes me want to travel around the world and just take photos of EVERYTHING!!!
So, naturally, I couldn’t take photos of anything I really ate today (besides dinner!) because of lack of camera. I’ll tell you what I did and ate though!
I did an online Yoga to the People class (class #5 always kicks my booty) and, for lunch, had a falafel sunshine burger in a pita with tomatoes, hummus and hot sauce. Snack was….yogurt with puffins and almond butter. 🙂
Dinner was truly something special.
I figured since I had to sit home and wait for the UPS man anyway (I had to SIGN for the camera!), I might as well make myself useful and do some cooking. I bought this use bag of russet potatoes the other day from the farm stand for a dollar (!) with the intent of creating a mushroom gnocchi recipe for next month’s Mushroom Channel recipe. It worked. Beautifully.
The gnocchi were actually super easy to make! Really! This recipe is from the Chez Panisse Vegetables cookbook (my new favorite) and I highly recommend it.
Then, I turned it into this:
I think it would make even Alice Waters proud. Really, really good. Unfortunately I can’t share the recipe since I have to send it off to my mushroom friends but I will let y’all know when it’s up and online…shouldn’t be too long!
Honestly, that’s all I have for now. I ate a windmill cookie and a piece of chocolate but was too busy trying to figure out the jpeg size on the camera to actually take a picture. I’ll be better tomorrow—promise! As for right now, I’m doing a mega load of laundry in Susan’s garage and am going to make some tea and read the instruction manual.
it’s getting COLD tonight!

October 27, 2009 at 9:04 pmI am obsessed with gnocchi! I’m with Jil, I often describe them as little pillows of heaven, but I’ve never thought to make them myself! I’m absolutely going to have to try this soon.
And congrats on the new camera!! So exciting!!

October 27, 2009 at 9:58 pmVery cool camera…..how exciting! The mushroom dish looks amazing, too. Have fun with the instruction manual. It’s cold and windy here on the Monterey coast too. Vivid pink sunset, and several large deer with huge antlers came through. Never tire of seeing them. When they are here grazing I pick moss off the trees and set in a pile near them. Moss seems to be their favorite thing.

October 27, 2009 at 10:17 pmLearn how to use the f-stops and aperature settings and you will be golden. Throw in some other tricks here and there and you’re gonna be a whiz in no-time. Just google using a DSLR and you should find infinite resources, I bet.

October 28, 2009 at 3:28 amOhhhhh so jealous! I’m saving up for an SLR right now…savings aren’t growing fast enough right now though – I’m getting itchy in anticipation!
Question for you – do you know what the temps are like in Northern Cali around Nov/Dec?

October 28, 2009 at 3:36 amCongrats on the DSLR! I just bought a Nikon D90 and it is intimidating. Years ago I was a semi-pro fast action film photographer and although the principles are basically the same – I am totally lost. I have been reading “The Photographer’s Bible” and “Digital Photography for Dummies” and that is helping some. I just can’t believe I used to be able to load, control exposure, change lenses, focus, and shoot, with a VERY steady hand, in the PITCH dark during a rock concert. Now, not so much 😉 Have fun with it.

October 28, 2009 at 4:09 amGreat camera!!! I am sad we are no longer camera twins, but excited to see your new pictures. I would love a camera like that, but for some reason I am super intimidated by them. I totally understand what you mean about wanting to stay up all night and read the manual. When I got my Garmin on Friday, I did that. The Garmin manual is like my new favorite book 😉
Gnocchi looks amazing, I recently found a recipe for it. It is a lot less complicated than I thought.

October 28, 2009 at 4:31 amHave fun playing with the new camera! I love tracking parcels online as well 😛
I agree, turn the flash off! A good intro book on photography is Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. Manual mode is the way to go!!
Deva (Voracious Vorilee)
October 28, 2009 at 4:34 amAwesome camera! Yes, turn the flash off! I sometimes use the one on my dSLR but only when it’s absolutely necessary – my f/1.8 lens really helps with the low-light shots, as does shooting in P or Av with the camera when I’m using my slower zoom lens. 🙂

October 28, 2009 at 7:52 amYou should pick up the book “Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant”. Your reference to Alice Waters reminded me of it and I think you would enjoy it! Just wanted to pass that along.

October 28, 2009 at 7:53 amI had the best gnocchi this past weekend and now I can’t stop thinking about it. Also, thank you so much for recommending Mint.com in one of your previous blog posts. November 3, 2009 at 5:54 pmI LOVE your necklace in the first picture (assuming its a necklace and not a zipper pull. if its a zipper than that vest is too awesome). Where’d you get it?! I’m always on the lookout for cute jewelry; its a weakness.
Congrats on the camera too!!! I switched to SLR a year ago and am still completely in love 🙂
