Breakfast

What Time Is It?!

Ouch! I’m posting and it’s only 6:27 in the morning. Haven’t done THAT in awhile! I woke up a million times last night thinking it was time to get up. Don’t you hate that? I was convinced the alarm was about to buzz. Meh.

This morning I made a new breakfast concoction. While I do love hot oatmeal, it’s rather tough to make when you are in a time crunch in the morning. Enter cold/overnight oats. They rock my world and I love them but they are an expensive love because of all the greek yogurt I go through (damn you expensive taste!). So, I thought today I would try a new kind of overnight oatmeal—cottage cheese overnight oats. Here’s what I used:

This new cereal:

It was on sale for $2.00 at Target yesterday so I thought I’d give her a whirl. I used the serving size for that, which is 1/3rd cup, and mixed it with 1/3rd cup soymilk last night.

This morning, I added a spoonful of peanut butter, 1/2 cup 1% cottage cheese, half a banana, cinnamon and a drizzle of maple. Basically, I did the same thing I do when I make my standard overnight oats with yogurt but instead I used yogurt’s cheaper cousin, cottage cheese.

It was good. Not amazing like with yogurt but I will definitely make it again because its easy, filling and pretty tasty.

Since I won’t be out of class until 12:30 and probably not home until 1, I packed a couple snackies to keep me going and my brain working.

I’ve never tried this interesting new Kashi bar. I was hesitant to buy it because it only has 110 calories in it and I know something with only 110 calories in it will not fill me up for a snack. But…then I thought I could either use it for a pre-run snack or pair with other snacks that contain more protein to get me through the day. We will see how this works out. It reminds me of a nutragrain bar.

Thank you all SO VERY MUCH for all the wishes and thoughts to Wendy and the family. You guys are the best =)

Have a wonderful Monday…See you for lunch!

    Morning, Jenna!

They definitely do not carry Bob’s Red Mill at my Target. Super jealous. They do, however, have those kashi bars and I got some yesterday. I had the same thought process, but I figured for a little pick me up, they would be fine. Let me know how they taste. Haven’t had one yet.

    Have a great Monday.

I am anxious to see what you think of the Kashi bar because I have been wanting to try them myself.

    Hey Jenna –

I also have become very fond of overnight oats! I tried a new method last night – I combined the oats with milk AND greek yogurt, instead of adding the yogurt in the morning… and the oats turned out extra creamy this morning 🙂 Not sure how that would turn out with cottage cheese overnight – but give it a try next time you use yogurt.

I’ve tried these Kashi bars in the apple cinnamon flavor, and they’re just OK. I agree that they do taste like Nutrigrain bars – more of a snacky dessert than an energy bar to fuel a workout.

I kept doing that all night–I would wake up and think it was time to get up. And then I had a dream that Karl Rove was telling me to wake up!!! Must have been all the spicy food I ate before bed…

Eeek, you added that information about Wendy and her family, AFTER I had already posted my comment last night – I hope you don’t think I’m insensitive!!! Now that I know about the situation, I am keeping them in my DEEPEST thoughts and prayers, and hoping for the best.

Great experiment with your oats. I haven’t had overnight oats in forever. Yours look delish.

Hope you have a good day. I haven’t read the post about Wendy, but I will right now.. Hope everything is ok. Sending positive vibes.

Must’ve been on the same target wave-length 🙂 I was there yesterday and picked up the apple spice kashi bars. (they were on sale!) Thought the same thing, especially after eating one–some nuts followed soon after! The bars were ok (not a strong flavor), the string cheese is probably the safer pairing, as my nuts weren’t portioned out… oops

$2 bucks for that!!! What a bargain! They have that brand at a specialty store here in Lincoln but they are all about 5.99 per bag! eek, little too high for a college budget like mine. Glad you like them!

Hey, Jenna — if you’re craving but want to save money, you can make Greek yogurt at home yourself. Just pour some plain yogurt over a muslin cloth or sieve and let it drain for a couple of hours… then turn it over, pour it back into the tub, and voila! Thick, Greek-style yogurt a la cheap.

I made your concoction of oats, cottage cheese, banana, and peanut butter over the weekend! It was delicious!! I would have never thought to add cottage cheese if it weren’t for you. KUDOS!

Love the Bob’s! The mueslix is my favorite, and I just used Bob’s semolina to make pasta this wkd.

Your meetup with caitlin sounded so fun! I’m jealous! Any Boston runners want to form our own meet up group 🙂

I just bought those new Kashi bars in Spiced Apple. Haven’t tried them yet.

Overnight oats is a great idea. I rarely take the time to make oatmeal in the mornings, but I love cold cereal anyway. Would be a nice way to mix things up though.

Hey all, has anyone tried the Yoga for Runners available on ITunes? I saw a little thing about it in Women’s Health this month and was wondering if it’s worth buying ($6 for a 15 minute routine).

I need to try those overnight oats sometime, I LOVE my hot oatmeal, but some mornings I think something cool would be nice. Cottage cheese is always good, it’s probably a great addition texture-wise as opposed to yogurt.

Re the previous post: I’ll definitely be keeping your friend and her family in my thoughts and prayers!

Good idea on cottage cheese for overnight oats… I usually just use the Horizon plain yogurt (not Greek), since the Greek stuff gets so darn $$

I just read the post below- sending thoughts and prayers to your friend and her family!

I had the exact same kind of night last night/this morning! I woke up at 130am and thought that it had to be time to get up. Ugh. After that I kept waking up every 1/2-1 hr. looking at the clock. Guess I was afraid of oversleeping?? Who knows. Here’s to a better night tonight.
