Meatless in March

happy_cow_large

The idea for this month came to me last week at work. I wanted to do something fun and different that yall could participate in and then, BAM, at 4:30 in the morning I thought “Meatless in March“! Its perfect—just like Sleepless in Seattle!!!!!” What does going meatless in march have to do with Sleepless in Seattle? Absolutely nothing my friends, but it sounded good after a thermos of coffee while pulling croissants out of the oven at 4:30. My coworkers think I’m nuts. Oh well. Anyways, we are in the season of Lent and even though I’m not big on giving up things and would rather add on something, I think this is an act of compassion and sacrifice that would do us all some good.

So, if you will, please join me for a completely meat (and fish) free month. And now here is the fun stuff—-if you PROMISE me you are committing, let me know via comment on this post, and at the end of the month I will pick a random winner to receive a big ol’ batch of my super charge me cookies….baked just for you! I also thought it would be fun for us all to share our favorite vegetarian recipes—I am thinking maybe on Friday afternoons the people that are participating could leave a comment on my lunch post with their favorite simple meal that they made last week. It could be breakfast, lunch OR dinner. Sound good?

So, to kick off Meatless in March (and my Sunday!) I made a big batch of fluffy whole wheat pancakes for breakfast! I used my favorite mix ever–Kodiak–and topped my two large pancakes with almond butter, maple syrup and strawberries and had a 365 brand vegetarian sausage patty on the side for some extra protein

Bliss—-

img_5229

And now I can officially say that I have completely finished a jar of almond butter BY MYSELF in 8 days.

img_5228

Nope, there are definitely NOT 14 servings in that jar. Haha :)

This morning I woke up 5:30 and since I didn’t want to start breakfast that early, I just snacked on a banana while I read Psalms and blogs

img_5226

I’m headed to church, then to lunch with 10 fabulous blog readers (and bloggers!). Enjoy your Sunday!

That cow photo is TOO FREAKING FUNNY :-D

Yeah I’m so with you on nut-butter jars not having 14 servings – for me, they have about…. 2?? ;-)

Enjoy church and the blogger meet-up today!!

I’m for meatless March 100% on this. Here’s a little bit on the actual sustainability of eating meat: http://biophile.co.za/sustainability/eating-meat-is-it-sustainable
Meat-Based diets require significant quantities of nonrenewable fossil energy to produce. & with a rapidly growing population, it places greater stress on the already-limited supply of energy, land, and water resources.
So here’s to you Earth, in the spirit of Meatless March!

+1 on the photoshop

hello love!
Well… this farm girl grew up with those guys grazing in her back yard! hehe I even showed cows in the 4-H fair and one year CRIED right in the middle of the show arena since the big lug stepped on my FOOT. I a not sure if that helped win the judges heart or not.

I LOVE you, my sweet friend, but Pol is sticking with some meat. In fact, I just told Dan I am hungry for a burger on the grill! :) I promise to CHEER you on all the way, however sweetie!!! You’ll see what my March plan for Pol is on my blog latah today… ;) XOXO

I’m so excited you’re doing this, Jenna, and I’ll participate…but I’ve already been vegetarian for going on 16 years, does that still count?? I’m adding yoga into my days for March, though, and you’ve certainly been an inspiration in that arena – you look fantastic!

18 Heather McD (Heather Eats Almond Butter) March 1, 2009 at 7:48 am

Jenna! I would love to participate but I’m going dairy free and trying to back off soy due to possible intolerances during March. With that being said, if I gave up meat, my options would be so limited. Hmm, maybe I’ll just stick to seafood. We did just stock up on wild salmon at Costco yesterday. :)

I do eat a lot of vegetarian meals, and I love the idea of recipe sharing. Thanks for organizing.

I’ve actually been thinking about this since Fat Tuesday! I thought it might be a good experiment to dive further into vegetarianism (I’m more of a “flexitarian” now). I thought if I could go completely “flesh free” (gross, I know!), then I could see how my body is reacting and decide whether or not to keep it up. It’s great to have a support system! I’m new to reading your blog, but I love it! Thanks for sharing!

Congratulations on the meatless in March idea! I’m a vegan so I could help recommend some good recipes.

Yeah, nut butters should either get bigger jars (with the same nutritionals) or get the facts straight…there is not as many servings as they say!

It is so funny that you have decided to organize a whole “meatless in march” because i just decided to do it by myself yesterday. I figure it’s a sign that i’m really supposed to do it:) i have actually decided to go vegan for the month. I was vegan for many years and am now a meat eater, but want to remember how great my body felt without all the animal byproducts! I’m hoping it lasts more than a month but right now i am only commiting to the month! I already have my meal plan and grocery list printed out and ready to go:) count me in! Have a beautiful sunday!

Thanks to you, this pancake mix my new favorite breakfast! It is DELICIOUS—THANK YOU! I’m wondering how much mix/water you use to make 1 serving for youself? I can’t seem to get it right—either I’m making too much or not enough?

Please help!!!!! Thanks Jenna, have a great time at lunch today!

Reply

28 jenna March 1, 2009 at 4:25 pm

Fancy,

Hi! I actually never have just made them for myself…I always use 1 cup mix and 1 cup water for pancakes for both Ryan and I!!!! If I were to just make pancakes for myself though, I am sure I would just use a half cup of the mix/half cup water. I can easily eat two large or three small pancakes and that seems to do the trick!

This is a great idea! I have cut out meat out of 95% of my diet for a lot of reasons, including for the health benefits, the money savings, and for the environmental benefits. I think it’s a really good thing for people to become less disassociated with their food and realize where it’s coming from. I am not going to PROMISE to partake in this because there will be situations in March where I won’t likely have a lot of choice in what I eat, but I look forward to following along with you! If you are looking for a book to read, check out Food Matters by Mark Bittman. It’s very insightful!

Reply

55 Ellen March 1, 2009 at 12:25 pm

For those hesitant about this, I just want to add that you don’t have to take a totally all-or-nothing approach. Any time you choose to eat vegetarian instead of eating meat, or to eat less meat than you would otherwise, you are doing a good thing!

56 Christie March 1, 2009 at 12:32 pm

I am definately going to try to go meatless in March. My husband is very hard to convince but I think that I can convince him to just make meat for his supper (the meal we eat together) and not mine. I already started today before I read the post!

I am super excited about the recipe swapping because I have never tried being vegeterian before and I don’t really know any good recipes. I have considered going meatless but I wasn’t really convinced until I started doing research on the environmental impact of meat eating. Thanks for the jumpstart!

I am definately going to join your journey. I would consider myself flexitarian and have been wanting to go more vegetarian, not sure what my hold back has been, other than feeding an omni family. I managed to maintain a vegetarian summer a couple years ago, just be modifying the family meals for myself and I think I’m ready to do it again. I am really looking forward to the recipe sharing.

We’ve been meatless in march! We’re normally just seafood, but we’ve been no meat for all of March. Thanks for the challenge, always good to mix it up a little! -e

Great contest! I am meatless in March + February, January, etc. I’m a 24/7 vegetarian. I sure would love to win!
