Behind The Butter

a good snack

I’ll admit it, I’m a habitual snacker. I could never be one of those people who only ate three meals a day. I’d die from hunger or sheer boredom.

However, I don’t keep any “trashy snacks” around my house. The definition of “trashy snacks” might differ from me to you, but I consider “trashy snacks” to be anything overly processed or full of white sugar and/or high fructose corn syrup. That includes store bought cookies, protein bars, cheeze-its, triscuits, “snack packs”, 100 calorie packs, sugary yogurts, bakery muffins and rich coffee drinks.

So what does that leave me?

Whole Grain Strawberry Pop-Tart Scones

Yogi Trail Mix Bars

Soft Baked Fig Cereal Bars

Vegan Chunky Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies

Double Banana Chocolate Chip Breakfast Bars <—-my personal fav!

Cheddar Jalapeno Hummus + sprouted wheat english muffin

Carrot Cake Muffin Bar

Cinnamon Toast Muffin with peanut butter

Piece of fruit (apple, mango, orange) with raw almonds

Whole grain waffle topped with almond butter and raspberry preserves

Apple or banana with peanut butter

Frozen banana soft serve with peanut butter swirled in

Larabar

Homemade trail mix

What are your favorite snacks? Tell me, tell me!

I am absolutely obsessed with Trader Joe’s hummus and will eat it on mostly everything. My go to dippers are carrots, but I also love to smear it on some toast and top it with avocado and tomato.
String cheese & nuts also are great snacks for me, I tend to want savory & salty over sweet snacks.

I’m new to your blog, but really loving it!
My favorite (healthy) snacks are: low fat string cheese, cucumber slices with hummus, whole wheat english muffin w/ peanut butter, Greek yogurt with honey and fruit added, cinnamon roasted almonds, spicy roasted chickpeas. Your list sounds great and I’ll have to put some of those recipes on my to-do list!

my favorite snack is definitely in your “trashy” category. it’s a Luna protein bar. Yes, it’s processed and high in sugar, but it fills me up and I eat nothing but whole unprocessed foods the rest of the day. And I have no interest in giving it up. It’s all about balance πŸ™‚

I’m a snacker too. Big time. Hummus, triscuits and sugar snap peas are my favorite but if I’m in the mood for something sweet it’s gotta be greek yogurt, frozen blueberries and a drizzle of pb on top. It’s like really really good for you fro-yo.

My absolute favourite snack is medjool dates, either stuffed with peanut butter/chocolate peanut butter if I’m in the mood for sweet, or stuffed with goat’s cheese if I’m in the mood for savoury. So good!

I also love the usual handfuls of dried fruit & nuts, houmous with raw veg, nut butters with fruit etc…I love to snack! πŸ™‚

I should start baking snacks more though so that the whole family can enjoy them. Some of your recipes look great…love the look of the strawberry pop-tart scones, sure my fiancΓ© would love those! πŸ™‚

If I had it around and didn’t have to worry about garlic breath, I think I would eat TONS of hummus! But I only make small quantities at a time, because of said problem with garlic – and my hummus have to have garlic πŸ™‚
Otherwise my favourite snacks are actually salty and meaty ones. A leftover piece of cold chicken or bread with salted Danish butter – yummy.
I think I consider most sweet things not so much snacks as treats, so most of what you’ve posted are treats in my book. Homemade granola bars are heavenly snacks though. Once again I cannot make too many in one batch, as I wolf them down like a crazy woman. Hmmm… It seems that there’s a pattern with the eating here…

Thanks for the snacking inspiration. I need to try those fig bars stat!

    Jenna!!!!

Im obsessed with almond butter on really ripe bananas. I have it for breakfast as well as snacks and sometimes (if I ran out of almond butter and just bought some, after not having had it for a while) I literally cant sleep im so excited about having it in the morning.

    WEIRDO ALERT.

But yeah, I feel you on the fruit/ nuts.

Quick question I was wondering – do you think you will get a pup? Do you have any specific breed in mind? I think we may be getting bulldog – not the Rottweiler I am so desperate get from Rottweiler rescue, but hubby is putting his foot down. I was re-reading your old posts and kept seeing photos of one. Does he live locally?

Seems like a dog would be very compatible with your lifestyle!

Just hate stigma that’s all. All things in moderation. No such thing as “bad” or “good”. To be fair – a lot of people might say bad things about the sugar and butter in your desserts….

    Snacks I like:
-Whole Foods or TJs organic vanilla low fat yogurt (in the large containers not the wasteful chemical laden little cups) with variety of chopped organic fruits (I cut up a bunch of different things and store in fridge in glass bowl, not plastic) for breakfast smoothie or snack) and 10 or less almonds or walnuts (10=180 calories)
-Or a small tin of sardines, kippered herring, or smoked oysters
-Or tomato slice with chopped fresh basil and fresh mozzarella cheese
    -Or 2 hard-boiled eggs
    -Or fresh dates
-Or small handful of pumpkin seeds
-Or white cheddar on 1 slice of Udi gluten free bread w/organic brown rough mustard and grill this
-Or blue cheese, walnut, chopped endive w/little bit of olive oil
-Or a few kalamata olives out of the jar

Never have crackers, anything processed, boxed, sweetened etc. Rarely have snacks anymore…as try to stick to 2 healthy meals a day since quit running a few years ago can’t eat as much as if not burning up calories on 6M+ run.

I’m an habitual snacker too – love what your “left with” to snack on! Waaaay better than Cheez-its.

Great post! Smoothie—banana, milk, peanut butter, honey. Delicious and keeps me full for hours!

You snacks all sound great. For snacks, I’ve recently been obsessed with carrots on top of sesame rye crackers with salsa, almond butter on banana, baked goods (muffins and scones from my baked stock or the local bakery), smoothies, yogurt, cereal, apples, avocado and edamame.

I am a snacker too. Hummus & whatever dipping agent I have on hand is my go to snack of choice.

Loving all the vegan recipes lately (and the comments about how Adam is handling the change)! My husband tells our story in one sentence- “I went to the bar for a burger and came home with a vegetarian.” πŸ™‚

Typical snacks for me: Yougurt w/ granola. Crackers and cheese. Chips and any dip. Assorted fruits.

I’m really trying to quit Clif Bars due to their long ingredient list but quickly got sick of Lara Bars every day! Lately I’ve been loving Fage 2% with honey, cinnamon and a 1/4 cup of Trader Joe’s bakery granola. I’m eating it as I type :).

Trader Joe’s trail mix, any variety. Oh My Omega makes me feel good about myself, but there’s this one that makes me think of Hawaii…totally can’t remember the name and I just threw the bag out yesterday, but it’s got dried cranberries and almonds and macadamia nuts and cashews and dried pineapple and BLISS. Best. Snack. Ever.

as a poptart lover, i don’t consider myself “trash” when i eat them or think that i have “trashy” eating habits. my dietitian doesn’t either. i don’t think you meant to imply people who eat what you consider to be “trashy” foods are “trash”, but my heart sank a little when i read it.

seconded. love the blog but the use of “trashy” here was pretty obnoxious. sometimes i want something to munch on without having to turn my kitchen upside down, and triscuits are delicious!

Of course I don’t mean people that eat so called “trashy” food to be trash. That’s like saying someone who does something stupid (me, all the time) to BE stupid. I never said that. I also put in to that post the definition of “trashy” food is probably different depending on the person”.

So sorry what I said was taken out of context.

peanut butter stuffed pretzels – baby carrots (just plain…I love the crunch!) I also like to carve things in them with my teeth. I also like a good crisp apple – I also like icecream and chocolate if those are considered snacks…shoot who am I kidding – at times I call those meals!

I’m new to your site and am loving it! Since I’m also Bay Area-based I’ll tell you my favorite snack is Wallaby Yogurt (especially the peach or vanilla flavor) and fresh fruit from the Farmers’ Market. Wallaby is made around Napa Valley but sold in Whole Foods and other specialty markets around the area. I’m so going to miss it when my husband and I move to South Carolina at the end of this summer. It’s all-natural, low-fat and so creamy. Adding fruit or low-sugar granola tricks me into thinking I’m eating a fabulous dessert when really, it’s completely healthy!

Out of curiosity I checked the Wallaby site and it turns out they now distribute around the US -including the Whole Foods just minutes from my new home! Although it won’t be a “local” choice anymore -I am so excited that I can continue to enjoy it!

Skinny Fat Kid is OBSESSED with an apple with almond butter. He eats one every night as long as he has both ingredients.

I’m happy with some Sabra hummus and lower-salt triscuits! For some reason, Sabra just tastes way better!

Does a plethora of cheese count as a snack as long as it comes with fruit? πŸ˜‰
hummus, veggie sticks, fruits, trail mix, homemade granola bars, dates, pickles. . .

I am a total snacker! I prefer snacking over larger meals! I do however, need to eat better snacks! My current almost daily snack is CHEEZ-ITS! Yes, one of the no no’s on your list! I am perfectly happy having a handful or two of cheez=its instead of a meal! I need to get back to my apples and Peanut butter snack days!

I totally understand what you mean about healthy snacks. I focus on keeping REAL food in the house & cooking from scratch for my hubby and 3 girls. I don’t buy processed food if I can help it. But even if I make or bake something with butter or sugar or other sweetener, I know it will still be better for my family because I know what’s in it.

And unlike the processed foods it won’t have high fructose corn syrup, any preservatives and red dye 40, yellow dye 1, yellow dye 5, blue dye whatever…etc, etc. It will have freshly ground whole wheat flour instead of refined, bleached white flour. And most times honey granules or honey instead of sugar.

It’s great to strike a balance, and I know you weren’t slamming anyone…we all have our “bad” (or trashy) foods we want now and then (I love ice cream…and dark chocolate…and the occasional frito!), but as long as we try to balance and keep them as treats, get in our exercise, and watch our portions….then why not treat ourselves. Life is TOO short!!

This newly turned 40 yr old has finally finished tweaking my real food habits, and think I’ve found a way to eat that will help me get off thse last 10 pounds and keep them off for good. Even with my foodie, butter & bacon lovin’ ways πŸ™‚ It’s all good…..and life is meant to be enjoyed!! Carry on……Jenna! You’re doing great!!
