A Hair Tale

hi guys 🙂

I’m feeling a lot better…thanks for all the kindness! I also got my hair fixed….I didn’t mention anything on here, but for some reason, my hair was turning more and more RED (!!!) every day since I went brown last weekend! Apparently there are two types of brunette: warm and cool. I’m definitely cool….”warm” does not go with my skin tone at all I discovered! It’s been a fun day (it took a whole FOUR hours to “fix” me) of color science at the Aveda salon, that’s for sure. And let’s just say I will never go back to a certain hair salon ever again. I was not meant to be a redhead. Thank you very much.

Can you see a difference?

The bottom is actually not darker at all, its just more of a cool, rich chocolate brown…more aligned with the undertones in my complexion. How crazy is it that one color can really wash you out and make you look sort of…..sickly. This is the closest color to my original “going dark” experiment when I was 17! And for those that asked, I am naturally a blonde.

Oh Junior Prom….how I miss thee. Well, not really but I did love that blue dress. I felt like a princess! That’s my best friend, Christie, in the picture with me. Now she has brown hair too! Here we were together last May in Charleston.

I keep getting a slew of hair related questions now to my inbox; so to answer all questions up front, here’s what I use on my hair:

Always been an Aveda girl. I think my mom washed my hair with Shampure when I was a baby or something 😉
Anyways. I don’t have too much good food to show because all I had this afternoon was a banana and then tonight I was RAVENOUS and tore this open with new brunette vengeance:

So glad my appetite is pretty much back to normal. I’m hoping after a really good night’s sleep tonight I’ll be a brand new woman tomorrow.

I love Aveda too. So true re warm or cool. I am ‘warm’ and if get low-lights or high-lights in ‘cool’ tone…looks very ashy on me instead of golden and then very grumpy.

Love Amy products, too. Glad you’re happy with hair fix! Does look great and fun to make a change on occasion.

Ooh I can really see the difference between warm and cool brunnette! I’d love to see which one suits me..I’m pretty pale so probably the warm one? But then I’m so clueless on that kinda thing 😛

I’m a warm brunette as my colour tones are from my Irish heritage – as a kid I had quite red hair. I once got dyed cool brunette and it looked awful on me so I totally know what you mean!

Hope you feel better in the morning – it’s a beautiful spring morning here in the UK 🙂

Oh my gosh, my senior year when I went brown they used demi-permanent warm brown on me. It literally faded right to red. I looked like Mary Jane from Spiderman. It was awful. I was not a fan so I completely understand. Plus the red usually takes FOREVER to get out! I had brown hair for my prom too. 🙂

Love the cool brown on you way more. I dye my hair a fiery red, so I’m on the other end of the spectrum. The first time I tried to dye my hair myself, it went pink! Yikes! From then on, I always went to a salon.

When I went from blonde to brunette, my hair turned red as well – but I LOVED it and now dye my hair a sort of auburn color! It’s definitely not for everyone, but I have the coloring to match it and do notttt look good with “cool” brown. However, on you – I dig the cool brown!

Hi Jenna – this isn’t meant to be critical, I’m just VERY curious as a natural blonde myself! My friend thinks you’re definitely a natural brunette in denial and I want to prove her wrong…

When you were a natural blonde, did you dye your eyebrows black?! I’ve never met a blonde with such dark eyebrows… I mean, light brown for sure for girls who were blonde in their youth and dye it when they’re older. But black brows are usually tell-tale of a bleached blonde.

Sorry to be nosy, we are just kind of fascinated and curious!

Love the hair sweet pea. Isn’t it amazing, the difference hair color can make? kind of like paint in a room…..I cannot tell you how many people have gone NUTS in a good way over me going back to dark, which is my natural color. I’m very pleased, but I was getting red tones in my brown also- I guess the old blonde coming through.
Ahhh the life of us glam gals right?? 😉

Love the new hair! That’s one thing I think is lucky about being a blonde – you have the versatility to change your hair… us dark haired chicas can’t exactly go bleaching our hair and going blonde (I tried once and it ended up a weird coppery orange and I had to run to the salon and get it fixed asap).

  • Kelly
    February 20, 2010 at 9:04 am

I think both colours look great but I do love the newer brown more, I think! I’ve always had blonde hair and have been tempted to go brown before but I am nervous it will look awful! I wish I had the same attitude as you do about it! Glad you are feeling better. I just got over a ~24 hr flu and it was awful. I’m glad to be eating again.

  • Shelly
    February 20, 2010 at 9:41 am

I agree, the cool is a much better look- although I didn’t notice the warm looking “off” until you posted the two pictures together. My hair is very similar. I am a natural light brunette/dark blonde (depending on who you ask, my colorist swears my natural color is dirty blonde but I think she’s being nice), and I need cool undertones. I’m forever fighting to make sure my dyed blonde hair is more sandy than golden, if that makes sense.
I’m pretty sure I keep my local Aveda in business. 😛

    February 21, 2010 at 7:17 am

It might actually be a good thing that you had it dyed a reddish brown first because of how blonde you were before… if you dye a cooler tone of brown on top of bright blonde like that it’s apt to turn a sickly greenish color as it fades. Red tones and prevents it from doing that… either way looks good!

I like it brown. I too went to Aveda and had to stop …. the color was making my scalp itch and I did some research and there products are really not that great. The ingredients are harmful. I told them about my scalp and they really didn’t help. I hope you have better luck !

  • Jean
    February 22, 2010 at 8:24 am

Maybe it’s the light, but I like the ‘warm’ pic better than the ‘cool’ pic – the ‘warmth’ of the redness adds some color to your skin tone. But there must be something up w/the lighting in the pics b/c if you didn’t like the ‘warm’, then there must be something wrong…
I use John Frieda color shampoo for brunettes – it’s AWESOME. My color doesn’t fade any more, and I can go longer between colorings.
