Still foggy? You betcha.
Now I rarely have days like today where I just can’t seem to snap out of it! For the most part I like to think I have tons of energy and am on my A-game, but every once in a blue moon my body gently reminds me to quit going 90 miles an hour and take care of it! The post-power yoga soreness is definitely a factor as well as the awful stormy weather we are having. Regardless, I decided today will a 100% total rest day. The LAST thing I need is to get sick just in time for my trip next weekend! I’d rather lay low now and be 100%.
My mom actually gave me the best advice of the day when she came over this afternoon and I told her how I felt and she said (in a very mom voice), “Jennifer, if you feel that tired, lay down and rest! Your body is screaming at you and trying to get the point across!” Moms are always right.
This morning while running “errands” (cough cough totally DONE shopping now) I grabbed a tall soy Awake tea latte. Tasted dandy but didn’t wake this slug up!
And then for lunch, I met the lovely Anne at one of my favorite hole-in-the-wall joints, Cafe Hey!

July 9, 2009 at 3:10 pmWhen I’m tired, I usually try to fight through it, but I agree that we have to listen to our bodies! I’m pregnant, so it’s especially important for me to take a nap or just watch TV or read when I’m feeling worn out. I have to remind myself that work, cooking dinner, running errands, etc. can wait most of the time.

July 9, 2009 at 3:10 pmgetting some fresh air and taking a walk always helps wake me up. but you’ve been going so nonstop it’s no surprise you need some down time!
i want that sandwich right now!
brandi
July 9, 2009 at 3:11 pmlunch looks great!
what do I do when I want to just rest? REST 🙂
if you have a can of tomato sauce, you can make your own sauce pretty quickly and no rain involved!

July 9, 2009 at 3:13 pmI love hot and melty sammies with hummus and cheese 🙂 As difficult as it is, when your body needs rest, give it rest! It’s much easier to take a day off when you first feel tired than to get sick or injured later. I’m on month 7 of a running injury and I wish I had rested as soon as I felt pain/tiredness rather than pushing myself…Feel better soon!
april
July 9, 2009 at 3:13 pmI normally watch a good movie or take a nap!

July 9, 2009 at 3:13 pmWhat do I do when I want to rest? I rest! 🙂 I love to curl up w/hubby and watch a movie. Any other time, I’m not a tv/movie watcher, but when I’m realllllly tired, there’s nothing like it.

July 9, 2009 at 3:14 pmYour “best sandwich ever” does look pretty darn good! Sorry you’re still in a fog 🙁

July 9, 2009 at 3:16 pmI have a hard time slowing down too. Even when I’m tired. I try to take a few minutes to lay on the couch with my book and the dog. Sometimes I doze. That’s usually enough to get me through ’til bedtime. Hope you wake up soon! Does sound like your body is craving the down time…
trish (girlatgym)
July 9, 2009 at 3:17 pmIf I am able to take a nap – then off I go to take one. And otherwise I just try to lay low, keep myself well fed. Being tired all day is the worst. I agree that all the rainy weather is not helping!
Runjen
July 9, 2009 at 3:17 pmI am like you and totally try to fight through it. I just feel like I have so much to do! Your mom is right though and we do need to listen and rest! I just have such a hard time with it. Hope you feel better!
Beth @ CrossBorderCravings
July 9, 2009 at 3:17 pmWhen I need a good rest I like a big blanket, a good book and a big mug of tea! Simple, but it feels so cozy and relaxing.
Simone
July 9, 2009 at 3:18 pmI would take the rest of the day easy. Maybe a quick cat nap and then go to bed early tonight?! As for the pizza sauce, if it’s still raining later and you don’t want to go out and get some you can always have white pizza (sauce free) which is always great, or pesto pizza (you can make your own pesto with spinach which im sure you have in bulk form costco for yours and ryan’s GMs), or even have a bbq chicken pizza and use bbq sauce instead of pizza sauce if you have any of that lying around. Hopefully that helps! Feel better!!
Shannon (The Daily Balance)
July 9, 2009 at 3:20 pmI cuddle up on the couch with the mister and a hot/iced tea and watch a move (or TV show DVDs)

July 9, 2009 at 3:23 pmUgh. Some days are just made for curling up with a good book.

July 9, 2009 at 3:27 pmI feel the same way today! I’ll take your mom’s advice 😉

July 9, 2009 at 3:33 pmI’m sooo tired, but sadly am at work for 3 more hours :/ ugh!!! My plan tonight is to lay in bed and read 🙂
Morgan
July 9, 2009 at 3:34 pmEnjoy your rest day, it sounds like you need it! Why not try pesto, BBQ sauce or even a sauce-less pizza? Or whip up your own if you have some of the canned stuff? I’ve used salsa to make Mexican pizzas with beans, veggies and some cheese, and a guac on the side, so yummy!

July 9, 2009 at 3:41 pmI’m hitting my mid-afternoon hunger time and that sandwich looks SO good. I love pressed wraps.
Emily (The Experimentarian)
July 9, 2009 at 3:42 pmHa Ha! I usually keep going until someone says something to me like your mom said to you 🙂 Then I remember how much i love to read, so I will pick up a book and indulge in that hobby for awhile…I agree with Whitney!
alex at happygoluckyalex.wordpress.com
July 9, 2009 at 3:43 pmOh your post makes me so hungry!
When my body tells me to rest, I nestle down in the couch with a Snuggie (yes, I have one. And I love it!). I think that is what I might do tonight. Oh and when I need rest, I always make sure to have a filling dinner- my bod needs some food to repair itself!
Jenna
July 9, 2009 at 3:45 pmthat sandwhich looks soo messy and good!!!! yum x 1000!!
Curl up with your book and take a nap jenna!!!! 🙂 I feel exhausted just reading about your adventures everyday!
Lori
July 9, 2009 at 3:49 pmSorry you are having a bummer day. When I have those, I love to just sit with a good book, or sit and read good books to my two little guys.
That sandwich looks delish! I would love to recreate it, could you tell me specifically what is in it?

July 9, 2009 at 3:50 pmI actually find that forcing myself to do something active, like go for a walk/run or even blaring my favorite tunes and getting my dance on, really seems to wake me up. Of course, a little caffeine never hurts. 😉
OMG, that wrap looks amazing. What a perfect combo of ingredients. YUM!
Sarah
July 9, 2009 at 3:51 pmFunny enough… i don’t nap. If I’m exhausted I will wait until a reasonable time in the evening and go to bed early.
To me the only thing worse than being tired is having my sleep schedule thrown off – I hate being groggy in the morning!!
I will do some things to make sure I fall asleep early – so no caffeine in the afternoon/evening, nothing to exciting/thrilling in the evening.. and a glass of wine never hurt anyone…
Maria
July 9, 2009 at 3:53 pmOh my goodness, that sandwich looks amazing! I would love to recreate it at home, mmmm.
I either read, sleep, or watch a great move/show when I am exhausted. Chocolate + hot tea is a fantastic accompaniment to the above 😉
Christie @ Quit Your Diet
July 9, 2009 at 4:00 pmI agree with your mom, rest up!!!
When I feel exhausted, my favorite thing to do is take a really hot shower, put on some comfy jammies and either read or watch some television.

July 9, 2009 at 4:04 pmthe avo in that sammie is looking mighty fine!

July 9, 2009 at 4:05 pmHey Jenna,
I love your blog! About the pizza sauce…I recently started using hummus instead! I set out to make homemade pizza one night and realized I was out of the regular stuff, so on a whim I tried it with hummus. It worked surprisingly well (with the brand I buy anyway). Just thought I’d mention it. Keep up the good work and congrats on your upcoming interview!

July 9, 2009 at 4:08 pmThat wrap is making my mouth water, and I’m not usually a wrap lover! I’m going to have to check out cafe hey when I visit my mom (she lives in St. Pete) because I’ve heard a couple great reviews now!
I’m a huge fan of tea lattes, and since I recently started a blog I wrote a post on making them at home! You can check it out here: http://jessiebea.com/2009/06/lazy-sunday-morning/

July 9, 2009 at 4:08 pmMake a pizza without sauce! I’ve been doing that fairly often lately. I’m actually making one tonight with spinach, mushrooms, drained and chopped canned tomatoes, and some cheese!
Hope you are feeling better soon! I say put on sweatpants and be a bum in front of the TV 🙂
Rose
July 9, 2009 at 4:10 pmWhen I really feel the need to rest, I usually spend the night inside, curled up in front of the TV with the BF and my cat and watch a movie.
Kelly
July 9, 2009 at 4:22 pmWhen I just want to rest I listen to my body and my mind and pick whatever I’m feeling at the moment. Sometimes it means spending a leisurely night in the kitchen other times its some TV or some Wii. Reading though is usually tops on my list. I love to curl up under my duvet with a good book and now that I have a snuggly dog who naps on my legs its even better.
Cait (Cait's Plate)
July 9, 2009 at 4:23 pmThat sandwich looks AMAZING Jenna! I SO wish we had that place up North!
As far as resting – I’m SO bad at it! I’m lucky I don’t get sick often because I need to always be moving to be happy! 🙂 But I find the best thing to do is curl up with a good season of DVDs and some hot tea and enjoy! Good luck!
Mary
July 9, 2009 at 4:26 pmIf you have the time, I would relax with a nice cup of tea & read or watch a movie. It’s good to take a time out every once in a while!
Your sandwich looks so GREAT. I would love to try to copy-cat that. yum. Love avocado.
Erin
July 9, 2009 at 4:27 pmWhen I’m exhausted, I rest. Otherwise I get sick. It’s good, no, GREAT, to take care of yourself lady. Don’t get run down.
Sarah
July 9, 2009 at 4:33 pmI find it hard to rest too and I actually like being busy, but sometimes you just gotta give in. I’ve worked naps into my Sunday routine and have sacrificed a few work outs to get in 7 hours of sleep every night. It’s worth it!
peabody
July 9, 2009 at 4:35 pmI rest. I too have been in a fog today. I cancelled all of my afternoon stuff since I have hockey this evening.
SnowKat
July 9, 2009 at 4:35 pmI totally laughed out loud when I read your question about what do you do when you need to rest ;D
I was thinking…. R.E.S.T hehe
I am now going to try and recreate that wrap you had for lunch ! MMmmmMMM
Jamie
July 9, 2009 at 4:36 pmI make my own SIMPLE pizza sauce! Use a can of diced tomatoes (I drain them real good in a strainer and smoosh all the liquid out), then I add a tsp of olive oil, some dried basil, oregano and garlic powder, salt. Stir all together and spread thinly on your crust. It is DEEEE-LISH!!! Hope that helps!
Sarah (LovIN My Tummy)
July 9, 2009 at 4:38 pmI “tank” that sandwich looks delicious. I also “tank” I am a moron.
Susan
July 9, 2009 at 4:44 pmI usually get pretty excited for workouts, so when I feel like I can’t push myself through one, I ask myself if I’m just being lazy or if I’m legitimately tired. If I’m too tired, then I don’t workout. Otherwise I’m likely to injure myself, get sick, and just further my exhaustion. Not worth it!!
Rebeca
July 9, 2009 at 4:46 pmeek! rest, rest, rest!
maybe a sauceless pizza with a little olive oil so you don’t have to go out?
Lisa
July 9, 2009 at 4:47 pmOh my, I want that sandwich now! It looks deeelish…
Your momma is right! All the best with your interview Jenna! Knock ’em dead…

July 9, 2009 at 5:02 pmMy days off (like today) I abandon blogging. Finish up some class work and watch Oprah. Oh and make raw veggie snacks all day to make up for skippin the gym. 🙂
Tracy
July 9, 2009 at 5:17 pmI usually sit my butt on the couch and read food blogs!

July 9, 2009 at 5:21 pmI just love how pepperjack adds some major kick to most sandwiches 🙂

July 9, 2009 at 5:23 pmHoly cow – that sandwich sounds incredible! Definitely lay low if you’re not feeling 100%. Traveling while sick is AWFUL espeically if you’re flying!
Meredith (Pursuing Balance)
July 9, 2009 at 5:25 pmIf I’m absolutely exhausted and need to rest, I do it! Whether taking a power nap or lounging with a book (or even watching TV), sometimes your body needs it. Other days though, I know I have to push myself through the day and just plan on going to bed earlier that night.
Hope you feel better! Take care of yourself!
Matt
July 9, 2009 at 5:48 pmI am making pizza tonight too! Homemade dough and everything!
Jenni
July 9, 2009 at 5:48 pmHoly yum! That sandwich looks incredible! Maybe Chez Ryan could whip something up tonight while you relax!
Sara
July 9, 2009 at 6:00 pmhmm when i relax i usually catch up on fashion shows on style.com, read a book, watch a movie or take a nap. that sandwich looks sooo good!
Melissa
July 9, 2009 at 6:11 pmWho would’ve thought a sandwich named “The Tank” would be healthy? Never judge a book…er, sandwich? by it’s cover! Yum!
Mama knows best Jenna. Take a snooze!
Lizzie
July 9, 2009 at 6:22 pmI am feeling exactly the same way this week. Noisy neighbors meant only 4.5 hours sleep Saturday night, and after a busy weekend, late night out last night (worth it to see friend I see once every 18 months!), and I am really struggling to get the energy up this week. Hopefully this weekend will I’ll be able to get back the missed hours of snoozing!!
Wednesday nights I have running group and don’t usually get back from that until 7.30pm, so that is usually homemade pizza night using Whole Foods wheat pizza base, reduced fat mozzerella, tomato and whatever frozen veggies are in house – usually broccoli and mixed peppers – and pasta sauce. It’s done in 12 minutes!
Liz
July 9, 2009 at 6:24 pmWhy don’t you try something else other than tomato sauce. You could make a peanut sauce and make a thai type pizza with a few carrots, red-peppers, peanuts, sprouts, sliced cucumber etc. Or you could use a bbq sauce, pesto if you have it, I sometime like a salsa base…any kind of spread type thing would be fun! We all know you’re creative, you’ll think something up….
Liz
July 9, 2009 at 6:26 pmhaha…i just read all the comments that told you pretty much the same thing…great minds…

July 9, 2009 at 6:28 pmDefinetely rest Jenna! i’ve made that mistake way too many times, working out on days i feel tired and like im “about to get sick”, and then i get sick for real, and end up in bed for 3 days.

July 9, 2009 at 6:46 pmI am officially in love with Dexter.
JEAN
July 9, 2009 at 7:04 pmShopping gives me a high so it jumps me out of my sluggish mood. For relaxation though, snuggling up on the couch with a fleece blanket, a glass of wine and the kids and hubby nearby. Yep – that does it!

July 9, 2009 at 7:12 pmI have the perfect prescription for “one of those days” – break open your copy of The Time Traveler’s Wife! I promise you won’t regret it! 😉
Suzanne
July 9, 2009 at 7:23 pmYou could make your own pizza sauce. I do! I take one can of canned tomatoes – well drained, one can tomato sauce, 1 clove garlic, 1/2 tsp dried basil, 1/2 tsp dried oregano, 1/8 tsp pepper and simmer it for 10 minutes or so. Then I puree it til just slightly chunky. My husband loves it!
When I want rest, I read or play a fun video game. I’m a nerd like that though. 🙂 Or a engrossing movie or show.
Kristina
July 9, 2009 at 7:40 pmI just want to say that i LOVE your blog Jenna! I always look forward to reading it. I just ordered an Amazing Grass t-shirt and one for my husband as well. Yours looked too cute so i had to get one. So on to “resting!” When i feel like i need to rest, i have absolutely no problem doing it(:! I put on comfy pj pants, read, go for a walk or watch tv. And as for that tomato sauce, maybe just make a pizza bianca instead? (it’s essentially made without red sauce, just use olive oil, dried herbs, s&p, and anything else like carmelized onions – yummy!)
Becky@I Heart Running & Food
July 9, 2009 at 7:54 pmYum that sandwich looks awesome!! I want it now…. 🙂
When I feel that my body is exhausted and needs rest, I lay low and don’t do any hardcore physical activity. I may walk or do something light but your body does have a way of telling you to slow down!
Rebecca
July 9, 2009 at 11:41 pmThat sandwich does look good! I love little, unique cafes!
I’ve never tried a tea latte from starbucks. I don’t usually put milk in my tea so I don’t think I’d like it.
Danielle
July 10, 2009 at 8:22 amOMG about Cafe Hey! I was on my way to the airport yesterday and passed it and thought to myself “that’s a random place to have a little cafe but it looks cute, hafta try it sometime.” Very ironic that you mentioned it today…well, ironic to ME, lol!

July 10, 2009 at 8:35 amsorry you’re still not feeling up to par. on days like you had yesterday, i always tend to snuggle up on the sofa and watch a good movie. if my body needs rest, i give it what it wants. if i just have to go somewhere and cannot resort to the sofa, i juice up some fruits/veggies and take a nice walk. the nutrients in the juice and the fresh air always do the trick! hope you feel better soon…
