The Bermuda Triangle

Today I have to make my way back to the dreaded DMV. I tried to make an appointment online but the first available was at the end of July??!! Is it just me or does the DMV represent everything we know and abhor on this good earth? And I’ve got the triple wammy. I not only have to wait in the line for two hours to get both a California drivers license AND my car registered…but I also have to pay $250 because everything in California is more expensive than the rest of the world. To be fair, I’m being a little dramatic because I could surely go right now and get there right as they open at 8:00 and, therefore, skip the two hour line. But…..I need to wash and blow dry my hair first. I mean, this new drivers license photo is going to follow me for years. I can’t look all deranged with the I just rolled out of bed look. You know?

So, moral to the story is this: if I don’t come back you will know what happened and you will know where to look for me. The DMV has that Bermuda Triangle effect sometimes.

On to better things.

Siggi’s sent me some samples of their yogurt to try and I couldn’t wait to break one open this morning to make some overnight oats. I had never tried Siggi’s before, honestly because greek yogurt is expensive and this brand seemed to be even more expensive than the rest. I always pondered what could make Siggi’s so darn expensive as I picked up my lowly container of cheap grocery store brand greek yogurt instead.
You know why Siggi’s is more expensive than Fage?
Because it’s CREAMER! This yogurt is, by far, the thickest greek yogurt out there. I mean, I’m talkin’ that it was hard to stir this yogurt with a spoon—that’s how thick it is. This ain’t no Chobani, that’s for sure. And just like me and my unfortunate expensive tastes, this yogurt is by far my new favorite out there.

Ick, I hate Choibani. I know, call me crazy… I like whole fat yogurt. Does siggi’s make whole yogurt?

Dear Siggi’s people: I love your yogurt, but it’s too darn pricey to eat on a regular basis! Can you remedy this?

And I do believe the DMV, no matter what state you live in, is a major pain in the boo-tay. ‘Nuf said.

Haha, you sounds like me with the expensive taste. 🙁 . . . I’ve tried every flavor of Siggi’s and my favorite is the ginger & orange. I have trouble buying them because of the price though. Two days ago, I picked on up, put it in my basket, and then put it back on the shelf because of the cost.

$250? Good grief, and I complained about paying $80 to get a TN license. So much so that I still have my TN DL despite living in NYC for the past two years.

Ironically enough, I’m probably moving to Los Angeles this fall and will be applying stat for a CA license… since I want to establish residency to get cheap grad school tuition whenever the time comes in a few years. Yeaaaah!

I hope you survive the Bermuda Triangle! Apparently, skyr can be made at home, using milk, rennet and cultures (= a tub of plain siggi’s). I have found some recipes online and it doesn’t seem that difficult. I have been making my own yogurt (whole fat and low fat) for ages, it’s basically just a matter of time. Plus, it’s fresher, cheaper, and you don’t have any plastic containers to recycle. Seems the perfect solution.

Even if you got there right when it opens, you’d still have to wait. I recently moved to SoCal and almost burst into tears seeing the line snake around the building at 8 am. Oh the pains one goes through to live in such a beautiful state 🙂 But yeah, the appointment thing is kind of a joke seeing as you have to book at LEAST one month out. Good luck! Yes our California DMVs are terrible. Your best bet is to go around 10:30-11 am.. Thats usually when I get through the quickest. Also if you log on to the DMV website and type in your location you can see what the wait time is at that moment and gage when it’s best to go in 🙂

I completely agree about the DMV – and I have to say, my greatest fear about universal healthcare is that it will all be run like ONE GIGANTIC DMV!!!

Having survived the California DMVs for most of my life, and now blessed to be living in the UK with universal healthcare courtesy the NHS, I can say with absolute authority, that universal heathcare is NOT like the DMV. It is a glorious, wonderful thing.

I had to battle the DMV in San Francisco in January. And by some remarkable feat of good luck, I had, dare I say it: a charming DMV agent. My car needed to be smogged and I hadn’t done it because I am irresponsible and didn’t read my notice. Anyway, I was bummed, but he promised me if I came back that day with the clearance from a smog shop, he’d let me cut in line with him. I did and he did! And then he drew a dinosaur on my registration. That is no lie! I need to take a photo and post it. It totally made my day!!

I have expensive tastebuds too, unfortunately. And I’ve been walking past the Siggis yogurt, convincing myself that plain Dannon yogurt is just as good. But now that I’ve read your description of it, I don’t think I’ll be able to walk past it next time. 😉

For future reference, if you are a member of AAA, you can register your car at the local AAA office and avoid the DMV altogether. They can’t help you with your driver’s license but at least the car part of it would be more pleasant.

I’m moving to WA the day after my CA tags expire – I will be spending most of my first day in WA getting my car registered – I feel your pain!

I was going to chime in and recommend AAA, but Lora beat me to it! I live in CA, and I can’t even remember the last time I’ve stepped inside a DMV. Hopefully, you’ve taken your picture and renewals from this point on will be a snap!

Siggi’s website explains what SKYR is-

    “What is skyr?
Skyr is the traditional yogurt of Iceland. It is made by incubating skim milk with live active cultures. The whey, the water naturally found in milk, is then strained away to make for a much thicker, creamier, concentrated yogurt. So to make just one cup of skyr, with all that water going out, you need 3 – 4 times the amount of milk required to make a regular cup of yogurt. As a result of this process skyr comes out with 2-3 times the protein count of standard yogurt.”

My son had the same dreaded experience at a Texas DMV today. You should move to Indiana! Our governor has streamlined the process somehow and they practically jump up to help you as soon as you walk in the door. I haven’t had a wait at our BMV (Indiana calls it a Bureau) in a few years now. First of all you can do lots of stuff on-line and they just mail it to you but even when you go they have a receptionist who takes all of your documentation and then puts you in the queue and before you even find a seat they are calling your name.
