Hello 🙂
Hope y’all had a good Thursday. Today reminds me of those “Thirsty Thursdays” we had in college where beer was, like, a dollar. However, I am reminded of this today not in terms of alcohol but just because its still raining so hard! Rain = water = thirsty? Get it? Maybe I’ve just been staring at the computer for too long.
This morning I busted out the juicer and made some juicy juice before bootcamp:

I used half an apple, a kiwi, 1 stalk celery and 1 small beet in this. Delish. Also had a little trail mix to keep me going strong through my workout:

And, I swear, today was the hardest bootcamp class yet! Most days its just Anna and I and is really laid back but today we actually had other students come in and take the class (the shock!) so it was more formalized. Started with a series of 10 sun salutations with double chatarungas with each one (those will work your triceps like none other!) then moved on to jump switches, leaping chairs, leap frogs, jumping jacks, plank flows, forearm balance & handstands and then finishing with about 20 minutes of abs. Its going to hurt to laugh tomorrow for sure. I did become obsessed with DJ earworm because that’s who we listened to during class…love his mashups and have been playing them all afternoon. No big deal: just a dance party with Dexter and I. Jealous? It used to be “write a page, do a handstand” but now its “write a page, have a dance party”. Woohoooo
Came home and inhaled a whole wheat pita with hummus and tempeh for lunch:

And then after writing a bit (made it to 25,000 words today–HALFWAY POINT!!!), made the snack that changed my life.

Behold: toasted millet bread with coconut butter and raspberry jam. Da da da daaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes, when I get really excited by something I eat, I will moan out loud and make highly inappropriate noises. This usually only takes place in the comfort of my own home so it’s all good. And this, my friends, was one of those occasions. The coconut butter melted completely into the toast and it was beyond words. This snack alone was worth the price of both the millet bread and the raw coconut butter. SO.freakin.good. Must repeat asap!
This snack also held me over from about 2:30 all the way to 7:15 when I went to dinner at Willi’s Seafood, one of my favorite Healdsburg restaurants. I love this place for a lot of reasons but mainly because they have small portions! It was perfect because neither one of us was all that hungry so we just got three small plates to share between the two of us.
First up: spinach salad with blue cheese, pecans, dates and bacon:

January 21, 2010 at 8:53 pmYaya! Congrats on reaching 25K. Must feel great! I took my first hot yoga (Bikram) class tonight and really enjoyed it – definitely going to feel it in the a.m. I can see why you love the practice of yoga so much. Thanks for the inspiration. Night!

January 21, 2010 at 8:55 pmLOVE DJ earworm to pieces! And I must try this Millet/Gina bread and coconut ice cream that everyone’s been raving about forever! Glad you enjoyed the restaurant so much 🙂

January 21, 2010 at 8:58 pmThat is my FAVORITE ice cream!! I started eating Purely Decadent when i was on a vegan and sugar free diet to combat my H. Pylori infection, and have since found the cookie dough flavor. Since I also have Celiac Disease, this is the perfect ice cream! I have never seen another cookie dough ice cream that is gluten free, dairy free and soy free! Amazing!

January 21, 2010 at 9:14 pmWhen I work on my thesis, I usually write at Starbucks or some coffee shop. I should totally start “write a page, do a handstand and/or dance party” traditions in the coffee shops! On a serious note, congratulations on hitting half way!!!

January 21, 2010 at 9:17 pmSo that flavor was better than mocha almond fudge??
Allie (Live Laugh Eat)
January 21, 2010 at 9:22 pmHooray for the halfway point!! Keep chugging along.
I definitely moan when I eat delicious food and flavor combinations! It makes it taste THAT much yummier. That bootcamp sounds intense! I wish we had something like that around. Maybe you can write one for us….after the book that is 🙂

January 21, 2010 at 9:23 pmCongrats on getting to that half way point! Today I went to the store and looked in the health food section for that millet bread (my guess was that it would be next to the brown rice bread and tapioca bread?). No where to be found!

January 21, 2010 at 9:27 pmI love coconut butter or oil on toast, with pumpkin pie spice.
And that’s my fave flavor of the coconut milk ice cream too. I second the need for a coconut milk ice cream store 🙂

January 21, 2010 at 9:27 pmI have seen coconut butter at my local market and knew I would love it but because of the calorie content I havent bought it. Now i feel like Im going to have to!!! Also when I went on a vegan diet for a few weeks last year I tried out coconut bliss’s dark chocolate and it changed my world. I agree that there should be places that only sell coconut ice cream- it reminds me of gelato alot, and there are gelato shops all over the place!!

January 21, 2010 at 9:43 pmThat dinner looks amazing, especially the “macaroni”. YUM! I fell in love with coconut ice cream a couple months ago, I started with the cookie dough. SO yummy! That slight flavor from the coconut milk just makes it. Also, you can get $1 off at coupons.com! Just a tip. 🙂
Chloe (Naturally Frugal)
January 21, 2010 at 9:43 pmI also love the coconut ice cream – it’s perfect for someone who is dairy free like me!
Glad to hear that your class is getting more students, even though it was a little harder today I’m sure it was fun to have other people with you.
Also – looks like a great dinner, Yum!

January 21, 2010 at 9:44 pmYum!!! I love that ice cream flavor too. Almost as much as the mocha almond fudge w/ coconut milk. 🙂 Is that Natural Ovens millet bread? That stuff is the shizz too. Thanks for the coconut butter/bread snack idea – methinks I will adapt it with fig jam on top.
Danielle (Coffee Run)
January 21, 2010 at 9:45 pmI totally agree, someone needs to open up a coconut ice cream shop!
And I’ll have to try that snack combo

January 21, 2010 at 10:44 pmOh, the ice cream looks delish! The juice does, too – LOVE beets in my juice! YUM! 😀

January 22, 2010 at 12:00 amnext time you’re in the city you should hit up Maggie Mudd’s in Bernal Heights ..
http://www.maggiemudd.com
they have the most insane coconut based ice cream EVER. You can also buy pints of some flavors at Whole Foods around the bay area…but if you go to the store they have way more flavors (try the memphis mudd pie!!!) and will also make you a whole vegan hot fudge coconut ice cream sundae!

January 22, 2010 at 12:32 amCongrats on being 1/2 way there. Everything looks delicious. Got caught up in projects didn’t go to the store. Baby organic carrots out of the pack. Mmm. Am SO glad to hear that Dexter is getting his dance on. Book sounds great too, and thought you’d like this JFK quote about the life of an artist:
“The life of the artist is, in relation to his work, stern and lonely. He has labored hard, often amid deprivation, to perfect his skill. He has turned aside from quick success in order to strip his vision of everything secondary or cheapening. His working life is marked by intensive application and intense discipline.” JFK
Resonated with me when was writing novel.

That workout sounds killer.

January 22, 2010 at 5:43 amJenna, one day will you write a book perhaps about the life changing year you have had this past year? Mostly I’d be interested in your words on working your way through grief, could be relatable to so many of us out here.
Truly love your writing style and look forward to books in future, whether lighthearted food romps across Europe or introspective ,
darker reads with flickers of your irrespressible sunshiney spirit.
All the best in your writing endeavours.

January 22, 2010 at 6:16 amOh my gosh, that books is awesome! My parents actually went to Bhutan a year-ish ago and my mom read the book in anticipation and then gave it to me. It was kind of life changing for me in a really amazing way. Maybe I’ll read it again! Hope you have a great day!

January 22, 2010 at 6:49 amYour boot camp class sounds great! I have been looking for something new to try — maybe they have one at my gym! And congrats on the book, I can’t imagine writing that much. Way to go!

January 22, 2010 at 6:49 amThat juice looks delicious! What kind of juicer do you use?
When I was in Australia, all the hotel breakfast buffets had juicers and it was wonderful to drink something made of purely fruits and veggies without all the sugar, etc.

January 22, 2010 at 6:49 amWoo Hoo! 25,000! Must feel so good!
Now I have to keep an eye out for millet bread and coconut butter and coconut milk ice cream! They all sound so good!
I just saw Julie and Julia and was thinking of you through the whole movie!
Need to have some dance parties soon!
Glad you are coming home for a visit! Hope the sun will shine for you!

January 22, 2010 at 7:14 amDance Party!! Awesome 🙂 I have never tried coconut milk ice cream… but I have never really been a fan of ice cream made from alternative milk products. Maybe because I expect it to taste like real ice cream and it doesn’t. Congrats on the half way mark!
Heather (Heather's Dish)
January 22, 2010 at 7:15 amyou’re hilarious…i love the inappropriate noises comment (probably because I do the same thing…embarrasses my husband!) that spinach salad looks like perfection.
congrats on hitting the halfway mark! 🙂

January 22, 2010 at 8:08 amWhew! That life-changing snack looks pretty good over here. What a day for coconut! Is your tempeh raw or cooked? I’m looking for a good way to eat tempeh without the bitterness. I don’t want to give up on it! As an RD-to-be, I think I would have a hard time suggesting tempeh to clients right now without making a face (that wouldn’t be good!).
jenna
January 22, 2010 at 11:11 amJessie,
That was raw…I prefer it seared in a little coconut oil but when push comes to shove, I just eat it straight out of the package. Its an acquired taste 😉

January 22, 2010 at 11:26 amJenna, I think you need to do a little video of some of these things you speak of in your bootcamp class… leaping chairs, double chattarungas (i don’t get the double), eagle abs things. I just want to see exactly what you’re talking about. Much appreciated! 😉

January 23, 2010 at 7:28 amThanks for the link to DJ earworm’s website. I’ve been listening to the demo for the last hour at work (don’t worry, I have headsets!). 😉 A dance party would totally make my day right now but I think my coworkers would start to worry about my mental health… I’ll wait until I get home.
